I. Sipping and Giggling
Once in a very far away village there lived two blooming young girls of royal blood. Their names were Robiena and Shaleevra. The village, or shall we say small empire, was off the coast of Greenland. It witnessed storms so terrible they sank every ship that came near it and winds so violent they smashed every plane that flew over it. It was hidden by a dense fog so thick that no one could see through it. Yet everyone knew it was there. Its reputation was known around the world for its famous princesses, you see.
On a very blessed sunny afternoon the two girls, who were in fact the daughters of King Elmer and Queen Freara, were basking by the side of one of their many elaborate swimming pools. This pool had been designed specifically for water volleyball, a favorite sport of theirs. It was two feet deep in the middle and three feet deep on each side, just to keep things interesting. The two girls laughed and giggled in the sun and talked of the fine young men at court as they sipped their ice-cold lemonade made from exotic imported lemons, hand-squeezed. It was a glorious afternoon, about 80 degrees with a cool northern breeze, and the two girls were looking wonderfully joyous and full of beauty as they lazily basked by their shining pool of water…
After sipping and giggling for a while they began to talk of the latest fashion. They talked of silk dresses in rich dark greens, blues, and purples. The latest dresses had puffed sleeves of clear gauze and lace necks worn with black velvet chokers. The style at that time required ankle length dresses even in the summer. Of course, also in style were summer dances held outdoors in the gardens. In fact there was a dance going on that very night. Soon they got up from their comfortable cushioned seats and walked on to the next pool, which was made for diving. They hung their robes on a nearby tree. Robiena went to dip her toe in the water but Shaleevra was already diving in with a big “Splash!” So Robiena leapt in and swam the length of the pool.
It was such a glorious day with the sun reflecting off the water’s surface. Little benches surrounded the shade trees and little daisies and red tulips burst through the colors of green and brown, all of which reflected in the water. And behind the landscaping, the form of a beautiful castle lay, turrets and battlements of stone contrasted with the puffy treetops. This castle was three stories tall with pinnacles atop the decadent towers. Robiena could see the window of their room at the very top of the west tower.
She thought to herself; thank heavens this was modernized castle, she should hate to have to climb all those stairs like they did in the old days. Not only was the castle fully carpeted, curtained and automatic, but there was a moat of the most interesting kind. It had jet streams of water propulsion to mimic a strong river, and in its deep waters lurked huge, man-eating fish with razor sharp teeth. An automatic drawbridge raised and lowered on one end. This castle had the whole works including elevators in every tower, so they were not without hope of making it to their room in time to get ready.
II. The Fetching
After drying off and putting on their sun-warmed robes, Robiena and Shaleevra made their way back across the verandas. Before they even reached their room, however, they were intercepted by two of the fine young men from court, their favorite two young men of course.
“And how are you today, my fine young ladies?” asked Rogleo.
“Fine thank you, and very much interested in your conversation,” replied the crafty young Shaleevra.
“Well we were wondering if you would like to join us tonight…Shall we fetch you up at six?” inquired Jaroc.
“We would be much obliged,” stated the rosy-cheeked Robiena.
As the two young men by the names of Jaroc and Rogleo continued on their way down the corridor the two girls grew very rosy cheeked indeed. As soon as they entered their room they briskly threw aside their swimwear and immediately started picking out their clothes for the evening. It was nearing six o’ clock and as they hurriedly brushed the last strands of their hair they heard a knock on the door. “Come in!” exclaimed Robiena. “We are in the powder room.”
When Robiena and Shaleevra turned around Jaroc and Rogleo embraced them and, from behind their backs, brought forth two bouquets of white roses and two boxes of exotic imported chocolate. “Why they’re gorgeous!” exclaimed Shaleevra. “And I just love chocolate,” added Robiena. Then the four of them waltzed out of the door and into the hall...
“My, my, my, don’t you four look about perfect!” said Mrs. Havelton, the private tutor.
“Why thank you Mrs. Havelton,” said Shaleevra.
“Well, you guys have a good night and we’ll see you at the dance,” she replied.
III. Dinner, Dancing and Games
They made their way down the hall and out to a private terrace overlooking the pools and gardens. Shaleevra ordered the shrimp and steak and Robiena ordered the pasta primavera with meatballs. During dinner they talked of favorite pastimes. Jaroc and Rogleo had built a treehouse in the forest beyond the moat and they all had frequented it last summer. They had played many games including a continuing adventure they called the “never-ending journey” in which they pretended to be husbands and wives with a family of six children. Shaleevra and Robiena had cleverly fashioned the children out of sticks and hay. As dinner ended, they got really excited about the dance.
They knew there would be streamers hanging from the tree branches and paper lanterns strung on a line from tree to tree. Shaleevra imagined soft music floating through the air and being held in the arms of Rogleo as he whispered sweet nothings. Robiena imagined the smooth rhythm of jazz pounding as fast as her heart. Jaroc stood up just then and offered his arm, “Shall we dance?” he asked. So they all stood up and started for the gardens, arm in arm, matching pairs. Conveniently there was a secret elevator which whooshed down to the bottom of the tower in ravishing style.
After following the merry flower-lined paths they arrived to be greeted by a server bearing a tray of deserts. They passed through the arbor and were swept away to sweet lyrics of “Truly, Madly, Deeply”, a song by Savage Garden (Robiena’s favorite song). It was a glorious bit of slow dancing but the games began right after. Rogleo challenged Jaroc to a game of horseshoes with Shaleevra and Robiena as partners. It ended in a tie, even after three tie-breaking rounds. While they were discussing what to do next, Robiena thought of a plan.
“Let’s play hide-and-seek in the dark!” she exclaimed.
“Ok, but only if we can go swimming first,” Jaroc said.
So they walked back to the secret entrance and went up to change.
“Good plan Robiena,” Shaleevra said. “Now we can find an excuse to try and kiss them!” They giggled and laughed, running all the way to their room. Robiena put on a yellow and orange flowered bikini, grabbed a thick matching towel and went out into the hall to meet Jaroc. Shaleevra put on a green and purple striped bathing suit, grabbed a heavy green towel and went out into the hall to meet Rocleo. The four of them hurriedly rushed to the swimming pool and started playing Marco Polo. It was very exciting and entertaining. The most fun of all was when they had a contest: each person had to dive into the pool and under the other person and then leapfrog over the next.
IV. Hide-and-Seek in the Dark
Next they decided to play hide-and-seek. After changing the other three rushed out to find spots while Robiena counted to 100. Shaleevra and Rogleo chose to hide in the apple orchard bordering the gardens. They found a nice little seat hidden in one of the tallest trees and were able to gaze up into the stars. Soon they grew close to each other and Rogleo put his arm around Shaleevra who snuggled in for warmth.
Jaroc waited for Robiena just to the side of the arbor where she counted with her head down at one of the tables. He had already scoped out a hiding place he wished to show her. When she had finished counting and obviously found Jaroc, he led her to cave, not at all far underground, set into a hill behind the castle. He turned and led into a room, dark and quiet, which was just what they wanted. They sat and talked in the quiet, just the two of them. Soon they were lying down on the rocky floor, Robiena resting on his chest and gazing into each other’s eyes.
Hours may have passed, they didn’t know, but eventually they all made it back to the west tower. Robiena and Shaleevra dozed off to dreamland, safe in their bunk beds, re-inventing all of the pretty lights and sounds and smells of that lovely summer day within the mists of Greenland.
The Continuing Adventures of Robiena and Shaleevra
I. The Manor
At exactly 7:00AM Robiena and Shaleevra awoke to the sound of the alarm clock; a steady ding, ding, ding. They got out of bed and were ready for a new day. It was their first day at the She-Women Boarding School. Their royal family had dropped them off at the all-girl tropical island, where the boarding school was located, after they had found out about them staying out late. Secretly, the King and Queen had moved to the neighboring island in order to keep an eye on them. The islands were not very far apart so that they could see their daughters whenever they wanted. In fact, they could just look through the telescope in their room and see the manor and the grounds, and the girls’ bedroom windows and with night vision. There was even a secret underwater tunnel that went across the lake, from one island to the other, almost a mile long.
And now for the good part:
Robiena and Shaleevra awoke and peeked outside; it was a glorious morning and they could tell that it was going to be nice and hot outside that day. They scampered-how cute! -over to their walk-in closet while doing the “Shannon” impersonation of the guy from “Far And Away”, another one of Robiena’s favorite movies. Their closet was as big as half of their room, that’s a lot. Robiena decided to wear her leather pants with the black drawstring and a shiny green silk top. She put on her biggest boots and started to brush her hair-it took a while. Shaleevra wore white hip-hugger linen pants and a white baby tee with the words “Hug me, I’m cute!” on it and a picture of a teddy bear. Then she started brushing her hair.
II. Sitting visibly
When all was done and their beds were made, the clock slowly turned its Kermit hands to 8:00AM…and they went to breakfast. It was an actual café that hosted buffet style grazing all day. There were plenty of healthy options to choose from. At 8:45 they were instructed to be in their first period class, which was shop! Turns out they were actually being made to help Mr. Herman, the groundskeeper, build his new cottage. It was still fun though because Mr. Herman let them measure and saw the boards while he used the hammer and nails to nail them to the frame.
During second period class they reported to Mrs. Snickerdoodle, a seemingly sweet, almost too sweet teacher. She announced she would be teaching them one of the hardest languages there was and that they would be assigned one hour of homework a night. They went back to the café for lunch. They were surprised to notice that the roof was folded back and that, in fact, they sat inside a little courtyard in the middle of the manor...
The rest is left unwritten...
