Don't Sell The Steak, Sell The...

Old School Salesmanship

How many of you can complete that sentence without resorting to Google?

Don't sell the steak, sell the sizzle.

That's the first of Elmer Wheeler's "Tested Sentences That Sell". <---Free Download

I'm not writing a biography of Elmer Wheeler so you can go ahead and search the internet for the tons of info about him if that's your thing.

Just to illustrate how well that "tired old saying" still works, think back to the last time you were at a Mexican restaurant and you heard the server walk past you with...

a sizzling skillet of fajitas.

Unless you absolutely hate Mexican food, you're probably hating me right now, or maybe I've given you an idea for dinner?

The concepts and techniques of classic advertising and marketing still work today.

Do you know what single word a shampoo company used to double it's sales?

Repeat!

Look at the label of your shampoo bottle. If they were selling an effective product why would you need to "Repeat"? But do you question that or do you go ahead and repeat?

I'm not taking a survey, you don't need to tell me in the comments below. Give me thoughtful comments that add to the conversation.

But I'm Not Selling Anything

Yes, you are.

You're selling yourself, every day.

You sell yourself to your boss, your clients, your spouse, your kids; you're selling you to almost everyone you meet.

Everyone except that asshole "insert asshole's name here", you're not selling anything to them.

Your work here on Steemit, whether it's creating, curating, upvoting or reseteeming is selling.

Hey, selling is the highest paid profession there is and it's part of your job whether you realize it or not.

You're much better off knowing it and polishing that craft though.

Take the opportunity to improve your selling skills.

Hell, here's a video of Elmer Wheeler himself (it's really cheesy and it's been shortened with some really shabby editing, but it still works today):

I have no affiliation with these web sites, but I like free stuff, don't you?

What tips does he give that you think won't work today?

Here's a later full length version (in color):
