Belmont Stakes 2017: Tapwrit makes late move to overtake Irish War Cry

There was no chance of a Triple Crown winner this year, but the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes still provided some drama.

Tapwrit made a late move to win Saturday's race at New York's Belmont Park.

Tapwrit placed sixth at the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness to get ready for the Belmont.

Irish War Cry and Meantime were in front for the first half of the race before Tapwrit made a move past Meantime. Tapwrit overtook race favorite Irish War Cry in the final stretch to win the race.

Tapwrit, which had 5-1 odds to win, started in the second post.

"Unbelievable," Jose Ortiz said of his first Belmont victory. "It's a feeling I can't explain right now."

Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing were not in the field.

Lookin at Lee, the only horse to compete in all three Triple Crown races, finished seventh at the Belmont.

Tapwrit Trainer Todd Fletcher got his third career win at the Belmont after he trained Derby winner Always Dreaming. He also trained Patch, which was the third-place finisher at Belmont.

Gormley was fourth, but Hollywood Handsome had to withdraw following a small laceration on his back left leg. He was taken away in a veterinary ambulance, but the on-site vet said the horse would be OK.
