Architectural Photography- Move A Church

My contribution to @juliank’s #architecturalphotography is a church that was cut into section, loaded on trailers and moved six miles to it’s present location on Wood Islands Hill, Montague, PEI.

A bit of the history of this Church before it was moved.

  • Originally this church was built in Valleyfield, P.E.I. It was known as the Free Church Of Scotland and later Presbyterian.

  • Bilingual services of English and Gaelic were held there until 1936.

  • When the United Church was formed in 1925, this church became part of the United Church Of Canada. Along with this Valleyfield church, several of the Methodist and Presbyterian churches in the local areas joined the new United Church denomination.

Due to the increasing numbers in the congregation in Montague there was a need for a larger facility.

In 1971 the Valleyfield country church was cut into 5 sections, loaded on trailers and hauled six miles to be reassembled at the top of the Wood Islands Hill. The church has been enlarged since the move.

The Valleyfield Church was renamed Hillcrest United Church and with it’s lovely Gothic style windows, sits proudly today on top of the Wood Islands Hill.

Location: Prince Edward Island, Canada.
