Renaissance- sand sculpture

When asked to create a sculpture over two days to depict the Renaissance I thought ' Are you crazy'. So much happened during this period of history and having to distill it down to a block of sand 1.5 meters by 1 meter was a big/small ask.

I thought quickly and decided on a simple collage of elements that jumped into my mind when I thought of this time. To me our understanding of nature and science was brought together through the amazing artists of the time. As they observed their surroundings and lay down the ground work of what we understand about the world today.

Leonardo da Vinci has always been a great inspiration to me in the way he was both artist and scientist. His mind seemed to be limitless in his pursuits and Michelangelo with his great knowledge of anatomy and composition. I tried to bring these two together and have a bit of a narrative in the composition.

The cross section of brain at the top flows into the two hands from the 'Birth of Adam'. These for me represent the passover of knowledge gained from their observations of the world into the tools for helping create great art and technologies.

As I said this was a two day sculpture so has a simple enough result. This was a small part of the 2016 Sand sculpture exhibition in Sneek the Netherlands. I did one other piece which I will post about soon. I changed the background in my photo to something more appropriate because the background on-site was a horrible wall.
