Dear community, here you will see an artwork I created in an old stone village in the mountains of Bulgaria. I am sharing also photos from the village itself.
I have created 4 different photo sessions there. Two of them were made in 2008. This artwork here is one of two created in 2010. The idea was to connect images from the traditional Bulgarian culture, the unique view, and body painting.
The village is called Kovachevitsa, located in the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria, about 119 km distance from the capital-Sofia. The name was mentioned for the first time in the Ottoman registers between 15th and 16th century. It was built by refugees from different areas. Some say they were running away from the Ottoman power, other stories speak about escaping from the back death- plague.
The village is very far in the heart of the mountain and it remained independent from the Ottoman administration.
The isolated location and the fresh water from the river Kanina were a perfect foundation for a new, free life.
The population at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th centuries was 17 persons.
In 1905, there were 1740 inhabitants. Around 1970 many of the houses were abandoned and began to fall apart.
Kovachevitsa is protected as a historical location for its unique architecture.
A lot of creative people, photographers, writers, painters from Sofia were attracted by the silence, good air and stone architecture of the village. Many of them bought old damaged houses in the 70ies and renovated them in the same historical way.
Kovachevitsa is also very close to Greece. It is just 2 hours away from the greek seaside.
Wish you all a lovely evening, and a great start in the new week.
This helps me to be more independent from commission works, and spend more time creating what I believe I should.
It also helps me to find time to write my body art history & initiation research book.
With love & light
Bella
