The above painting is interesting to me as it shows industry in 1611. What a hard life people had then!
It is thought to be Marten van Valckenborch’s last painting. It is painted on a copper sheet.
Marten van Valckenborch lived from 1535 to 1612. He was a Flemish painter and draughtsman. He came from a family of artists.
Marten van Valckenborch liked to paint landscapes, farming and industrial scenes. He also painted a few portraits and still lifes.
Some of his work was allegorical which was fashionable at the time.
He also liked painting religious subjects.
Marten van Valckenborch spent years travelling around the Aachen area of Germany with his brother, where many of his paintings were sited.
Now I will show you some more of his work.
The building in this painting looks quite modern to me, haha, but the animal in the foreground show how old it really is. The formal garden must have been quite something to see.
What a feast! I wonder if it was harvest time. The produce looks delicious.
Several of the artists in the van Valckenboch family painted this imaginary building so I guess it was a talking point at the time.
I leave you with this image of a portrait by Marten van Valckenborch:
