The Enjoyment of Painting Nature

The Enjoyment of Painting Nature

I love spending time in nature, away from the business of everyday life. That is where you can hear the symphony and rhythm of the frogs and crickets. This kind of environment brings out the artist in me.

It is in the silence that you can hear more clearly, and understand more deeply.  We live in a world that is filled with constant noise, so we must intentionally make the time to seek silence. As of writing this blog I can hear a Nightjar’s evening call in the distance.

Nightjars are difficult to see as their brown, grey and black plumage blend very well with the environment. They make their nests on the ground and their shape is similar to that of a cuckoo bird. They are nocturnal birds and feed on beetles, spiders and a variety of insects.

Their call is very distinctive and consists of a lovely high pitched sound. This sound can consist of up to an amazing 1900 notes a minute.

The above painting I have painted in acrylic.

As with human fingerprints, each zebra has its own pattern of stripes. Each Zebra is one of a kind and not patterned like the other. Each one is unique and a joy to paint,

There are many interesting facts regarding the zebra family. They are one of the few mammals that are believed to see in colour, but cannot see the colour orange. A group of zebras is called a ‘Zeal’. The zebra is mostly covered in white, and striped with black or brown stripes. Underneath their striped coat the skin is black.
