I want to show you some of the amazing art scene in Mauritius. Next wedensday I am supposed to go there again, but due to the world situation my flight has been cancelled. I have been looking forward to see the latest street art, but instead I have been looking at photos from previous trips. The island has amazing art scene.

But in Mauritius it's not only about street art. Art takes many forms. When I was in Mauritius in descember 2017 it was at the same time as the island arranged the Porlwi festival of contemporary culture. An event held in the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis. The intention has been to advocate culture, but it also has a very strong educational component. It involves a lot of people, stimulating creativity and culture.

The theme of the 3rd edition in 2017 was NATURE – the desire was to reconnect with the land and integrate with nature. Port Louis turned into a greener city. People were out in the streets until midnight, watching light shows, street artists at work, music and dance performances, eating street food and visiting galleries.

At the Citadel - a fortress and historic monument, high above the city, the theme was solar power. The road winding its way up to the fort has been decorated as well.

When it got dark, the “solar jars” lit up the space within it’s walls. Music and performance with light, added another dimensions to the whole experience.

Art in all forms became something everyone could enjoy. Everything was free, except for food and drinks. And for the artists – a great way to be seen. What made the deepest impression on me, was the youth involved in the project. They were there to meet us and to educate us. In detailes they would educate the visitor on invironmental issues as global warming, pollution etc. To involve the youth in a way like Mauritius did at this event, is a unique way of raising awareness on invironmental issues among the youngest generation. Not only that, but about their own culture and history.

A short film put toghether by Chris with photos from the event itself and the street art I discovered during the days of the event.

Please do follow if you want to keep up with my next street art. Any upvotes or resteems are hugely appreciated!
