I had some hours to spend before my flight to Norway, and just thought I should take a walk in the city center.
I was surprised of how many murals I managed to see in just a few hours! Aberdeen looks to me as a city in grey, but certainly not «a grey» or dull place to be. The street art is amazing. When I was back home I had to check and do some research. I thought to remember when I was in Stavanger, that Aberdeen also is part of the Nuart festival which started in Stavanger. It is. I also read that the 2018 edition was the second in Aberdeen. Aberdeen is a city has with some incredible pieces of art.
The very first piece I saw, was this large mural at The Green – Aberdeen Market, in the heart of old Aberdeen. It is a litle girl painted by a German duo Herakut. I think I managed to find out that this piece possibly was one of those painted for the 2017 festival. It is very impressive to look at.
A little further on I came across this mosaic by Carrie Reinchardt. Looking closely on the mosaic, there is a woman in the midle of the one to the right. The paintings are in tributes to the victims of Aberdeens witch hunting in the past and the suffragettes. I managed to find out that she did 4 mosaics for the 2018 festival and her focus was inspirational women from Aberdeen / Scotland. If her intention was to draw attention to the history of Aberdeens witch hunting, I think sthe has managed that. She managed to raise my curiosity. I wanted to find out more about the theme. If ever I go back to Scotland and Aberdeen again, I know so much more about the history.
