STREET ART – three years of street art in Flekkefjord

DSC_01.JPG

A couple of weeks ago I visited Flekkefjord, to see what this small town has managed to produce when it comes to street art.

This little town by the coast of southern Norway has untill now had 3 years with street art, starting in 2015. Art from both local, national and international artist. The older part of town consists of wooden houses and narrow streets. Probably one of the best preserved old towns in Norway, but with an urban touch.

Flekkefjord has two murals by the artist AFK. Both were painted in 2016. Often his stencils are laced with political undertones. His style is quite discrete and he uses litle color. For the last few years he has established himself among the elite of norwegian street artists with his work being some of the most exeptional that the city has to offer.

This was painted by Hama Woods in 2015, a stencil artist based in Oslo. Her work demonstrates a reverence for nature and its immediate connection to humanity.

The meaning behind the painting:

Deep in the roots of an old pine tree live the children of the forest. Playing hide-and-seek with the squirrels, snowballing in the winter, each season brings its own adventures - but perhaps spring holds the best surprise of all.

The storybook 'Children of the Forest' by Elsa Beskow was the inspiration for Hama Woods' wall. The wall features a giant rabbit being fed strawberries via a rope-pulley system by small frogs. The adventurous settings and the fantasy-like scenes portrayed in the book was a great starting point for Woods. On a deeper level, in addition to the wall being inspired by Elsa Beskows childlike stories, the wall takes a critical angle, addressing the skewed distribution of benefits in our world”.

A large mural on the the fire station was painted for the “StreetArt Hollenderbyen 2017” by MIMI - artist originally from South Africa, but grew up in London. MIMI is one of those artist using different tecniques. The image looks like a character from a norwegian fairy tale...looks like a troll....
