๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ–ŒJenny's Art Contest Week #14 Entry - Spirit (Story and Process Inside)

2018-01-11 12.04.44 1.jpg

Hello guys! I am finally feeling a little okay now (well somehow) so I decided to make my entry for this week's contest of @topkpop. I am sharing the process to you as well. This is my first year in using digital art so you could see, I still need to work on it a lot. I would love to read your comments as well.

This will serve as a simple art tutorial as well. As much as possible I tend to make my work easier so that others would be enticed to make art!

At first glance, you might find this illustration a bit odd so let me share to you the story behind it.

In my philosophical belief, I always view spirits to be good-natured beings. Beings in a sense that they too have something in them that is common to us and that is the memories that was instilled to them while they are still alive.

This lovely couple died in a car crash during their trip to their honeymoon destination. They were heading to a certain tourist spot in Jeju Island when suddenly the car's break was faulty.

It was the wife who died instantly as the impact of the car towards a lamp post was really strong on ner her seat. The husband felt so bitter upon seeing her lovely wife breathless. What made him feel more sad was thae fact that they were expecting a baby. The wife got pregnant a month before their wedding celebration. It should have been a taboo in both sides of their respective families, but then they all embraced it. Life from above is a blessing as what they say.

It was weeks after he died in the ICU. While the family was begging for his spirit to come back to his body, he was already roaming around Jeju and was looking for her wife's spirit as well. Days after searching for her, he finally found her.

The wife was not expected to see her husband as she wanted him to live longer than she did, but as he said, I would not mind about everything that was left behind as long as I have you.

Some people view love as a substance that is encompassing all boundaries even death. This post is dedicated to all those who had been left behind. I hope we may find comfort knowing that our loved ones' spirit will be forever looking over us.

##And now for the process, let us get started!

I used the Sketchbook for Galaxy App that Christian forwarded to me a month ago. I decided to do an outline of a cemetery that is not that crowded on the first layer.

On the second layer, I sketched the lovely couple. It took me sometime though to come up with the gestures and facial expressions that they would portray. I tend to lessen the opacity on the second layer to have an idea of the depth of the background.

Since this is also an art study, I took time on choosing the colors for the face of the lovely wife. Since she has Malay race just like I do, I chose brown hues for her but not that dark since her skin should be glowing. Like I said, spirits are always good spirits.

You can basically see I used a darken shade of brown for the outline of her face and then lighter tones of brown for her skin tone. It took me awhile to come up with proper colors though that would go well together.

As you can see, I already chose the tones for her face. I decided to go over her hair. Since they both are Asians (and almost all of the Asians have brownish or black hair when we were born), I used black and dark tones of black. I used a pen for the details and brush to put a highlight on some portions of the hair.

I added another layer for the wife's face. I used it just for sketching and deleted it after I had finalized the details on her face.

I added blush on her face too so that she looks blooming.

I also outlined the couple's attire.

I used a black brush again to paint on the husband's suit and hair. I chose this brush as it is able to give effect that I was looking for. I made sure though that I would not paint all of the corners of the suit to give that shiny effect.

I painted the dress with variations of red such as orange red and then crimson red. I also highlighted some portions with light pink.

On the sketching layer for the face (since I do not know other terms to use), you can see that the guy's eyes were open wide, but then on the final layer, I made it like he is giving an eye smile. Pag masaya ka di ba abot langit naman ngiti mo?

I then painted the details for the background. Here is the step by step process for it.

As you can observe, I used the spray paint feature using variation of colors blue, grey, and green. I also sprayed yellow on the right top corner or the art space to show that it is a sunny day.

Also, in regard with the groom's face, I also did the same thing. I added another layer to have a guideline.

And this is the gif I made for this post.
