Creature Creation - Part 1

I spend a lot of time reviewing comic book art on my blog, so it might make sense to you, that I draw comic style art and have ever since I was a young child. This is all original art by KidSysco and I will break down each piece giving some insight into the creation process. Everything in this post is Copyrighted by KidSysco.

Princess Scala

Scala rules her section of space from her home planet which she is named after, Scala. She does not have a mouth, and her bottom half is that of a snake. So she communicates and consumes using psychic energy entirely. Scala and her followers are the deadly enemies of most humans, she is jealous of the distant human outreach and the precious objects they collect throughout space and time.

Initial Sketching

Nearly everything I do usually starts out in a sketchbook. I took a screen shot here to show the guides inside Photoshop, the guides are never exported as they are typically never intended to be seen. These guides will be used to correct the distance and spacing of her arms later on. I try not to worry about those details when sketching, I don't wish to curtail that part of the process. The sketchbook is not for perfection, it is for ideas and it is important to keep those ideas flowing at this point. The photo was created using a simple digital camera and then imported into Photoshop.

The Outline

I usually start out with the outline using a Wacom tablet in Photoshop largely tracing what I drew on paper. You can see the corrections made to the positioning of her arms. I also added some more interesting folds in her cloak and refined that California girl style hair she carries on her alien head.

Painting

This is usually my favorite part of the process. Nearly all of the hard parts are done and I am just painting in Photoshop using the Wacom tablet. Each major group of colors usually gets it's own layer so I can paint outside the lines many times, knowing that I will just cover it up with more color later on. The light source will become more important during this phase in choosing colors for shading.

This was a super fun piece to create and visualize through her background and storyline. Please keep in mind that all of this art is copyrighted by KidSysco and Evil Bit Entertainment. This art may not be used anywhere else for any reason.
