The Moon Baby
The red Moon loved the yellow Sun, occasionally he peeked into the daytime sky just to get a look at her beauty. He longed to be close to Sun and tried to follow her across the sky, but she was always out of his reach.
One night Moon climbed up to the top of the sky and began crying, the stars surrounded him, they tried to comfort him but even their shining light could not relieve him of his sorrow. Without Sun in his life his heart felt empty. His cries could be heard by the creatures of Earth, and the wolves began to howl back hoping their singing would also calm his sadness. But Moon could not be comforted; his heartbreak became a burden for him so he decided to cut out his heart. Moon turned and shook and his heart dislodged and fell towards Earth. Without the passion for Sun in his heart Moon turned from red to white, he grew cold.
Moon’s heart fell, turning from crimson to white as it tumbled through the sky. The kind Northern Star saw the heart fall and felt Moon’s pain, so she made a wish upon Moon’s heart. She wished for Moon’s heart to be united with his true love.
The heart lay there cold and dormant under the thorns of a rose bush until morning came and Sun’s embrace began to warm Moon’s heart. The cold rock began to stir, and its surface softened. Then two eyes opened and the cries of an infant could be heard by all the birds, as the sun rose into the sky the birds began to sing. Moon’s heart had turned into a baby, Moon Baby.
A hungry dragon was living in the mountains and heard the cry of a newborn child. He flew to the rose bush where he found the infant wrapped in glowing white swaddling that shone like the stars. Seeing this sight the dragon bowed its head and pledged its devotion to Moon Baby. He pushed the baby out of the bed of rose petals and onto his head.
The dragon soared into the sky carrying the baby on his back. As the dragon came closer to Sun something strange happened, Moon Baby began to grow legs and hair. Moon Baby began to turn into a man, Moon Man. As they flew up higher into Sun's arms the dragon and Moon Man began to glow red as the passion for Sun that was in Moon’s heart was finally reignited.
Moon Man still rides the dragon across Sun’s surface leaping into the air like a burning ball of fire. And, whenever Moon thinks of his true love Sun he can be seen to glow red in the sky, but there is still a crater where his heart once was.
