Sunset rocks!
Not only do sunsets rock, they are also amazing to paint on rocks!
Maybe I had a romantic dream ( I can't remember) but I woke up with the intense need to paint a sunset scene. I paint/draw these settings a whole lot so they are kinda on automatic pilot for me but, I never made one on a rock before!
Sunset Rock!
At first I thought, I will do this! No problem! Then I realized that rock really is no paper and seeing I had no sissor.... Nah, just kidding! The rock was rather smooth but I gave it a little wash anyways. Just normal water and some dish soap. Drying time and of course, snack time!
When the stone was totally dry, I started to paint with the three main colors. I used light yellow, yellow, orange and red. I also added a hint of white here and there to get some high-lighting. I used normal acrylic painting for this and did not base color as in white. I just painted it straight onto the rock.
Picking the horizon line.... I never pick I just go with the flow! Not alway sthe best choice but it's how I am and how I work. I decided that painting mountains would be the way to go for this one to make the horizon clear. Mountain-rock.... Figures. It really makes sense in my head!
I love that you can do anything with black paint when you draw or create sunsets! I did not really added water to my paint today because I wanted it to be a good layer. I used Amsterdam paint btw. This is a really nice oily paint and holds a lot of pigment, this makes the colors look more bright.
After the horizon/mountain were set it was time to put the Sun in place. For this I picked up some clean water with my small brush and made a drop of water fall onto the orange paint. If you do this you get a nice circle and if you wait about one minute and press down some kitchen towel you will pick up the paint you placed there before, leaving a nice clean surface in a perfect circle. I added some yellow first, than some light yellow and highlighted it with white.
A perfect sunset needs happy trees! Yupp, I like Bob Ross and his happy trees will forever show up in my work as well. So, it was time to draw some lines and see where they would end up on this rock! I also added some extra little rock in the water just because I though that would rock!
All in all, I am really happy with the outcome of this rock painting! Now that I finally done what I wanted from the moment I woke up, I can sit back and relax! NOT... There are already new plots and plans popping up and I know for a fact that I will not be able to sleep until I get them on canvas or stone!
Thank you for reading my post!
Best wishes
