Dear friends of art,
the documenta is one of the most important art-exhibitions of the world and usually opens its doors in Kassel (Germany) every five years. As the slogan of the actual documenta 14 is: "Learning from Athens", a part of the exhibition also took place in the greek capital.
Therefore it's no wonder, that the largest and probably most iconic artwork of the exhibiton is a replica of the temple on the Acropolis in Athens, which symbolizes the aesthetic and political ideals of the world’s first democracy.
The artwork is called:
The Parthenon of Books
and has been conceived by the Argentine artist Marta Minujín.Liebe Kunstfreunde,
die documenta ist eine der wichtigsten Kunstausstellungen der Welt und findet normalerweise alle fünf Jahre in Kassel statt. Da das Motto der aktuellen documenta 14: "Von Athen lernen" ist, fand ein Teil der Ausstellung dieses Mal gleichberechtigt in der griechischen Hauptstadt statt.
So verwundert es nicht, dass das größte und wahrscheinlich symbolträchtigste Kunstwerk der Ausstellung eine Kopie des Tempels auf der Akropolis in Athen ist, der für die ästhetischen und politischen Ideale der weltweit ersten Demokratie steht.
Das Kunstwerk heißt:
Der Parthenon der Bücher
und wurde von der argentinischen Künstlerin Marta Minujín erdacht.
The 66m long, 30m wide and up to 20m height steel construction with 46 pillars is going to be hung with appx. 100,000 (once and still) forbidden books. The artist wants to create a symbol of opposition to the global banning of writings and the persecution of their authors.
Die 66m lange, 30m breite und bis zu 20m hohe Stahlkonstruktion mit insgesamt 46 Säulen wird mit ca. 100.000 (früher und heute) verbotenen Büchern behangen. Die Künstlerin möchte damit ein Zeichen für die Meinungsfreiheit und gegen Zensur und Verfolgung von Schriftstellern in aller Welt setzen.
The place of the installation is the Friedrichsplatz, which is the central place of the documenta and also lays vis á vis to the Fridericianum, where the first documenta took place in 1955 .
Der Ort der Installation ist gut gewählt, da der Friedrichsplatz der zentrale Platz der documenta ist und direkt am Fridericianum liegt, in dem 1955 die erste documenta stattfand.
[At] Friedrichsplatz in Kassel [...] some two thousand books were burned during the so-called “Aktion wider den undeutschen Geist” (Campaign against the Un-German Spirit). In 1941, the Fridericianum—which was still being used as a library at the time—was engulfed in flames during an Allied bombing attack, and another collection of some 350,000 books was lost.Source
Der Friedrichsplatz wurde als Standort für dieses Kunstwerk ausgewählt, da dort am 19. Mai 1933 rund 2.000 Bücher im Zuge der sogenannten „Aktion wider den undeutschen Geist“ verbrannt wurden. Außerdem befand sich im damaligen Fridericianum eine große Bibliothek, welche ebenfalls im Krieg teilweise zerstört wurde.Source
The shortlist of books used for the project consists of 170 titles, many of which are considered among the classics of world literature today, and is collected with the help of public donations, as well as supplies from publishers and universities.

Die Kurzliste der für das Projekt verwendeten Bücher besteht aus 170 Titeln, von denen viele heutzutage zu den Klassikern der Weltliteratur zählen. Diese werden zum einen durch private Spenden, sowie mithilfe von Verlagen und Universitäten zusammengetragen.
Es ist erstaunlich wie viele bekannte Bücher verboten waren oder teilweise heute noch sind. Hier ein paar Beipiele:

Each book used in the work was individually wrapped in plastic to shield it from weather before they being wrapped around the metal columns of the structure.

The completed work is built to the exact dimensions as the greek Parthenon.

Minujín’s The Parthenon of Books traces its origins to an installation titled El Partenón de libros, which was realized in 1983, shortly after the collapse of the civilian-military dictatorship in Argentina, and presented the very books that had been banned by the ruling junta. After five days of exhibition, two cranes tipped the building slightly to one side, allowing viewers to remove the books and take them home.Source
Der Parthenon der Bücher geht auf eine Installation von Marta Minujin aus dem Jahr 1983 zurück. Damals trug das Werk den Titel „El Partenón de libros“ und wurde [...] in Buenos Aires errichtet. Auch dieses Werk wurde im Stil des Tempels auf der Akropolis errichtet und war in etwa 15 Meter breit, 30 Meter lang und 12 Meter hoch. Damals wählte die 1943 in Buenos Aires geborene Künstlerin Bücher, welche während der Zeit des argentinischen Militärregimes (1976- 1983) verboten waren.Quelle
Bottom Line
The Parthenon of Books impressed me. Even if the topic has been implemented a bit too bold and gigantic, I was able to see the main issues of the documenta mirrored in it.
I was really surprised, how many books had been previously and currently forbidden. For example "Mickey Mouse" had been forbidden in the former German Democratic Republic, because it trespassed against the ruling worldview, or "Alice in Wonderland" in China, because animals are not allowed to think like humans. Or the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood", which had been forbidden in Spain, because the colour "red" also relates to communism. That's why "Little Red Riding Hood" turned to "Little Blue Riding Hood".
"Learning from Athens" in this context means to remeber the original values of democracy and to stand up for freedom of thinking and writing.
Because a democracy, that is built upon censorship, can never be a real democracy.
Fazit
Mich hat der Parthenon der Bücher sehr beeindruckt. Auch wenn das Thema vielleicht ein wenig zu plakativ und zu gigantisch daherkommt, konnte ich in der Installation die wesentlichen Themen der documenta widergespiegelt sehen.
Ich war wirklich überrascht, wieviele Bücher früher und heute verboten waren. Zum Beispiel "Mickey Maus" in der ehemaligen DDR , weil es gegen das geltende Weltbild verstieß oder "Alice im Wunderland" in China, weil Tiere nicht wie Menschen denken dürfen. Oder das Märchen "Rotkäppchen", das in Spanien verboten wurde, weil "Rot" als Farbe auch für Kommunismus steht. Deshalb wurde dort aus "Rotkäppchen" "Blaukäppchen".
"Von Athen lernen" bedeutet in diesem Fall, sich auf die usprünglichen Werte der Demokratie zurückzubesinnen und für die Freiheit des Denkens (und Schreibens) einzustehen.
Denn eine Demokratie, die auf Zensur aufgebaut ist, kann keine echte Demokratie sein.
