Recapping The Dwelling Workshop!
On Saturday - Author Doug Karr (@dougkarr) and artist Ophelia Fu (@opheliafu) hosted a workshop on their collaborative novel Dwelling. The workshop was part of The Crypto Renaissance Exhibition in Brooklyn, NY.
Dwelling is a character-driven crime novel, inspired by true events, about a vicious landlord who violently works to eradicate his long-term tenants to flip their rent-stabilized Lower East Side apartments.
Visionary blockchain artist Ophelia Fu created 60 original ink on paper artworks for the serialized Steem blockchain premiere publication of Dwelling - a wonderful collaboration which grew organically out of the blockchain. Karr and Ophelia Fu met digitally through the STEEM blockchain, then in person in Lisbon at Steemfest. Soon after they began planning their collaboration on the novel Dwelling, with inspired results.
The modern-day tenement in Dwelling serves as a pressure cooker where culture, class and capitalism collide, forcing the interconnected tenants to fight for their futures, and increasingly their lives. The main characters’ stories interweave, bringing the neighborhood to life. The tenement’s inhabitants are a vibrant menagerie of misfits that serve as the novel’s chorus, pulling back the curtain on the insidious side of gentrification and a landlord who will stop at nothing to flip his treasured dwellings.
