Travel with me #27: My experience of the Sotheby Auction Company.

Dear fellow steemians:

Whenever someone mentions the UK, you will probably think of the Big Ben, the London Eye, fish and chips, and probably shopping? But aside from these, there's also lots of museums worth visiting too. Today, i'd like to introduce another English speciality--Auctions!

Sotheby and Christie's are world famous auction houses with roots from the UK. They have built up their reputation and quite a fortune. Their primary activity is holding auctions of top grade goods all over the world and are naturally competitors. I heard about the Sotheby Auction Company some years ago and decided to have a visit with my friends after attending the London Fashion Week.

All pictures below are all my own photography

Sotheby Auction Company is located on New Bond Street, London. When you walk into the Sotheby Auction Company, the first impression is that it feels like a museum. They have 3 different rooms; the gallery, auction room and the restaurant. On that particular day, there was a preview of the Bear Witness Exhibition, so we visited the gallery first.

The Mickey Mouse exhibit at the door catches my eye, it feels like i'm in Disney Land

PADDY GORDON FOR DISNEY
ARMCHAIR AND OTTOMAN
Estimate 400 — 600 Lot Sold 3,000

The collection is curated extremely well. I felt as if I walked into a science fiction film and it's some time in the future. Although i'm not a professional, I do have a high appreciation and passion for art.

This table was put in the Lobby and I quite like it as an art piece. It reminds me of a table I once saw in the Rick Owens shop. However, I'm not sure i'd like something like this in my home, no doubt it's an impressive piece of art work, but i'd actually be quite scared by it if I was making a trip to the toilet at night. Maybe in the future when people have robots in their house, this table will be accepted as the norm by many customers.

On to the very cool main exhibits:

This exhibition is about discovering the strange and yet interesting works of contemporary art and other artefacts.

It features works by a number of well known pioneers of post-war contemporary art including the likes of Andy Warhol, Mark Rthoko, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha and Marina Abramović. It's main theme is the bear and skull which is presented in numerous mediums and art-forms. Whether it's an object of beauty or strange and uncanny, all the items here were offered for sale by a single owner!

The recurring theme of this collection is as I mentioned before, the bear and skull and features famous artists like Warhol, Hirst and Rothko. It also Renaissance-era marble skulls and 19th century theatrical props. It's truly a testament to the unique taste and passion of the collector.

The huge excitement generated throughout the week by our extraordinary “Bear Witness” exhibition carried straight through into tonight’s sale
PAOLA PIVI, Life is Great, 2007.
Estimate £50,000–70,000.

The bear is my second favourite exhibit, I love his shaggy hair and disrupted posture. It's hard to see from the photo, but the bear is at least twice taller than anyone else.

XAVIER VEILHAN
THE BEAR NO. 3

MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ, Carrying the Skeleton, 2008.
Estimate £20,000–30,000.

The paintings below are like performance art.

Very interesting 3D art.

Very special sculpture.

This concludes the first part of my experience at the Bear Witness Sotheby Auction Exhibition. I hope you found it interesting! Do let me know what you think in the comments!
