The Old Dog Presents: Beach Wednesday. You Won't Believe Where I was!

There I was strolling along a magnificent pristine white beach staring at the inviting crystal clear water.

My nephew's boat sits on the beach ready to set sail!

Exactly Where Was This Private Paradise?

  • The Bahamas?
  • Perhaps the Barbados?
  • Would you guess the Dominican Republic?

What About 2 Hours North of Toronto In The Georgian Bay Area of Lake Huron?

If you guessed the above then you'd be correct! Among the many islands of Georgian Bay you'll find Christian Island and its amazing sand dunes and white beaches!

The swimming is amazing because you can walk out for about 100 meters before the water is over your head! This allows the temperature to be quite comfortable! When it's windy the waves can reach almost 2 meters and the body surfing is awesome! And yes that's The Old Dog in the photo!

A Little of The Island's History

Christian Island is inhabited by the Beausoleil First Nation. They were originally  nomadic and traveled around northern Georgian Bay and the United States around Lakes Huron and Michigan. In the beginning the Canadian government tried to assimilate the First Nations peoples and encouraged the Beausoleil to give up their nomadic life style and settle at Coldwater as part of the Coldwater Narrows Reserve. Later the Natives were displaced to Beausoleil Island in 1842 and  then finally to Christian Island in 1856 where they remain to this day.

How Did I Come to Enjoy That Beach?

The First Nations people have allowed a limited number of people to lease land and build cottages on this lush playground. So it came to be that my sister as well as several members of my extended family have spent many a summer there enjoying all that it has to offer.

Almost every time I visit Canada I try and make time to visit the island and have a swim in the the amazing lagoon that you see in these photos!

I hope that you enjoyed my Beach Wednesday pictures!

Until next time,
