"All County Swim Meet"
This weekend marked the unofficial end of summer for my son, as we celebrated the annual All County Swim Meet followed by the swim team's end of the year party.
The All County Swim Meet is similar to the Olympics, where 20 swim teams from the metropolitan area compete against each other competitively, as well as together on relays, and against oneself to beat your own best times. Due to the large number of swimmers, the day is split into a.m. (starts at 6 a.m.) and p.m. (starts at 12:30 p.m.) events. This year we had the afternoon slot.
"Winning!"
This was his summer swim team's third consecutive year of being undefeated after many years (and I do mean many years) of having no wins. That's a whole lot of time we've banked spent in the hot summer sun, with twice a day practices Monday through Friday and weekly swim meets without having a win. Hard work pays off though.
After months of drout and intense heat, go figure it would start to rain at the end of the year party. No big deal - at least there wasn't any thunder that forced the kids to get out of the pool...What do they say about rain? It's a blessing?
"Unto Each Life a Little Rain Must Fall"
This year my son had his first job. He was one of the swim team coaches for the team on which he's swum since he was eight years old (he is now 17 years old). He was the coach for the 5-6 year old children who had never before swum. Most of the kids in his lane would sink if you let go of them at the beginning of the swim season. By the end of the season, they were able to swim independently 25 meters, 50 meters and some were even awarded for swimming a half a mile. That's a huge achievement and one I hope the swimmers and my son carry with them the rest of their lives!
"Let's Hear it For the Coaches"
The best part of the day, hands down, was the end of the year party. After 10+ weeks of daily swim practices everyone bonded and formed friendships both on the swimmer and parent levels.
As long as there's a pool and a diving board, everyone is happy! Cannonball!!!
"Just Keep Swimming"
After all the awards and recognition are done, it's time to chill and have fun - rain or no rain!
