Scheduled time to be today (10/5/16) @ 3pm UTC (11am EST)!
for those curious, that is approximately 6 hours from the time of this post being posted
The Golos team has generously accepted my requests to shed light on the plans of Golos moving forward and answer community questions from all of the curious Steemians! If you hold Steem-based tokens you will get a stake in this project, so being able to ask these questions is important for both Steem an Golos moving forward.
As everyone who pays attention to steemit and has a history in cryptocurrency knows, the cryptosphere is full of pitfalls and dangerous experiments. However, the ones that pay off can pay off big both for investors and project teams. Due to this High Risk, High Reward attribute coupled with the Open Source nature of blockchain based project code, there emerges a dynamic that incentivizes clones to be made for no reason but to "improve upon" a project, asking for large sums of money upfront. Some projects shine, while others die...and at the end of those roads sit hordes of bag holders asking themselves "why me? I was in this for the long haul".
Some of the often cited reasons for creating clones for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are the following:
- Experimental
- Unfair initial distribution
- Disagreements over branding
- Disagreements over path forward for original
- Geographical Location (I'm making a coin for all people in Iceland!<--actually happened)
Now with this said, those of you who have paid for some of these coins at any time in the past have likely been a bagholder as well at one point or another. So over time it becomes apparent to veterans of this game that it is only fair to be able to ask questions of project teams...especially when they are asking for money upfront, which is the current standard in the blockchain industry (not just Golos).
On a brighter note I wish to explain that while cloning chains can be seen to have many negative consequences for the original chain...if all subsequent chains that follow can adopt the perceived improvements that a clone may create, it can be synergistic to have multiple chains. This is not the only potential positive. Though Golos has to deal with similar issues to all clones, there are distinct differences that Steem uniquely brings to the crypto space. So Golos being the "Litecoin" to Steem's Bitcoin is entirely a possibility, but the first step comes with transparency, and that step is taken onto a path that hopefully brings us to a sense of responsibility.
Though I have been somewhat hard (and honest) on Golos in the past, an AMA with the Steemit/Golos community has been one step in a direction that gives me hope that the steemit community will be able to at the very least have any concerns they may have heard and understood.
