Today was a great day! A good friend of mine “dragged” me to a knitting circle. I’ll be honest, I’m not the most social person, but I’ve wanted to explore this shop since I first laid eyes on it three years ago when we took our grandsons to St. Thomas (Ontario) to see the big statue of Jumbo the circus elephant who was hit by a train.
I looked across the street and saw the sweetest old house turned into a yarn shop, Little Red Mitten. It’s what I picture The Shop on Blossom Street (by Debbie Macomber) would look like. So I tucked it away to explore another day.
BTW aren’t my Grandsons ADORABLE? We had so much fun that day, touring around and enjoying new playgrounds.
I have to tell you I was not disappointed. From the moment we pulled into the ample parking lot I started to feel excited. It’s not often that I go to a yarn shop that carries all the soft, colorful yarns that you just don’t find at Len’s Mills, Micheal’s or Walmart. I could picture sitting out on the front porch on a sunny spring day working with these fabulous fibers.
I’d also like to point out that they are Accessible. You would have a hard time moving around the whole shop in a wheel chair but these ladies were so friendly and helpful that I’m sure they would help you find what you are looking for and more.
So, I open the front door and there it is!! Colors and textures beautifully displayed. Honestly you just can’t control yourself, you have to TOUCH THEM! And this was just the first room. This shop is room after room of well organized rainbows of fiber. Talk about overload! I was in heaven. Walking around touching each different fiber made me feel as giddy as a small child at a petting zoo. There was Alpaca, Camel, Llama, Yak and yet no Angora?
What is luxury yarn without Angora? Well, I’ll tell you…. It’s all about having a conscience. This shop doesn’t carry angora because of the unethical harvesting practices. Yup…you read that right! Thank you! I had never thought about it. In my mind I pictured the sweet bunnies being brushed. This is not exactly the case and I don’t think I need to go any further. You can picture that too.
I have to apologize because from this point forward the last thing I was thinking about was taking pictures. If you would like know first hand what I was experiencing I suggest you visit the shop or explore your own local yarn shop!
We slowly made our way to the back of the shop where some ladies were sitting around a table chatting and knitting. I tentatively put my purse and coat on the chair while my friend introduced me. Surprise! Unlike the yarn store here in North London I felt comfortable and welcome right away. No pretenses or cold stares, just a common love of FIBER. Honestly I felt like I’d come home. I will definitely be coming back.
For the next three hours we knit and chatted and explored various yarns. I learned a new cast on technique and enjoyed seeing what the other ladies were creating. These ladies are very talented! At some point another lady came in who I instantly liked. My friend introduced me, and surprise again, she’s the owner of the shop. Joan, Thank You for creating this colorful haven for fiber junkies!
Little Red Mitten offers many classes and knitting circles several times a week. Every one of the ladies working there quite obviously has a passion for their work and are so very helpful. If you would like to know all the details visit them here at Little Red Mitten.
If you are looking for your own little piece of Blossom Street keep looking. It’s out there.. I think I may have just found mine.
