How are you today? Are you doing okay? Well rested? I'm not. Let me tell you why, but first, a little backstory...
About two years ago, on an autumn evening, I was home alone. It were my single days, so ofcourse I was home alone. The weather was bad; it was raining a lot. Then, a heavy rain came. A very heavy rain. So heavy, the sewage system could not process all of the water. Streets got partially flooded and my toilet started coughing up sewage water. Not only the toilet, but also the shower drain. And the drain in my storage room. Before I knew it, there was a steady stream of sewage water coming from all three places.
My bathroom got flooded, my storage room got flooded, my bedroom got flooded(they were all downstairs). Panicking, I called my mum and asked her what the heck am I supposed to do? Basically all I could do was mop up some of the water and empty the buckets outside. She called my dad and they hopped in the car to come over and help me. By the time I was done with that phone call, anywhere I would walk downstairs, I would hear water under the floor boards. In some places, it came up when I walked over them.
My parents arrived and my dad had brought this vacuum cleaner that could hold water. By then, the heavy rain had stopped and there was no more additional water coming in. So while he drained the rooms of most of the water, my mum and me mopped up the rest and tried to clean as best we could. All the wet stuff was put outside (my backyard was overrun with my wet belongings). Talking to the neighbours living in the same block of houses, they had all had the same problem.
When we were done cleaning up, my parents left. I immediately send word to my insurance company, but ofcourse it was evening, so I had to wait until the next day. They send over a guy. This guy came over, took one look at all my stuff outside and said "Well that's not good. Let's have a look inside." While he was over, my regular repair- and all-round handyman came over, because I had troubles with my boiler. They knew each other, had a little chat and he told the insurance guy he'd best take good care of this girl out of his home town.
That he did. The insurance guy, bless him, told me the whole floor needed replacing. He would send someone for that. I would have to write up all the stuff that got ruined by the sewage water and name their estimate value. He would also send over a plumber to see if there was anything we could do to prevent this from happening again. He basically arranged everything. Now that definitely proved to me the value of insurance.
I had to stay in a house without floor for a couple of weeks, because it needed time to properly dry. Then, I got a beautiful new floor. The plumber couldn't do much, but he installed a hole in my rain pipe outside (which is connected to the sewer). There's a screw cap on there, so whenever bad rain is expected, I can take it off, so the water has a way to escape, before flooding my house.
Since that day, the toilet has acted up a few times during heavy rains, but no new flooding. I think the screw cap really helps. However, since that day, I am also very anxious, any time there's heavy rain. It stresses me out so much.
Back to last night!
I woke up around 4, having to go to the toilet. I heard thunder and rain started to fall. I checked my phone and noticed there was a lot of heavy rain expected in the next hour. My boyfriend had also woken up and came downstairs to unplug out electrical equipment. I'm not sure if it's even necessary, but he knows I feel uneasy keeping them plugged in during thunder.
I started being on high alert, with all the rain. It was already raining quite heavily and we hadn't knows, so the screw cap was still on. We went back to bed, but a few minutes after, I noticed my boyfriend had gone back downstairs. The sweetheart had decided to wait for the rain to calm down for a moment, so he could take off the screw cap, knowing I wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.
We went to bed again and I felt so much better now. The rain and thunder calmed down quickly after that, but after all that adventure, I wasn't able to sleep well again. I was really tired, but falling asleep is quite hard for me, especially after I've already had a few hours.
So this is why I'm not well rested. My head feels heavy and a headache is on its way. I'm sure by the time it's evening, I'll be properly awake again, as always. But until then, I'll just have to spend the day as a zombie. Let's hope the next night won't bring this much rain!
I hope your day started out better than mine!
But right now, the sun is shining and birds are singing. I have my cup of tea... All's good.
