Yellow African Marigold in Java #Macrophotography

This is African marigold (Tagetes erecta). Indonesian people call it "bunga tahi ayam", meaning "chiken's shit flower". It is not a good name. I don't know why people give a bad name for this beautiful flower. Maybe there is a cultural or historical reasons behind it.

Sometimes people confuse it with wild-sage flower (Lantana camara). Try searching "bunga tahi ayam" in Google and you will find "Lantana camara". Google should change it's database.

People like to put this plant in a garden. But, do you know that marigold can make you a fortune. In Bali, Indonesia, there is a big marigold farm. One of the farmers said that the price of this flower is Rp 3,500/kg or US$ 0.25. But, in peak season, especially in holy days, the price will reach Rp 15,000 or more than US$ 1.
