Architecture: Simple House In My Village

Nature has provided us with tremendous amount resource for what we need to live our life well, as long as we do not destroy it. Medicine, Food, clothes, shelter and more are well provided as long as we learn to use it properly. One of the man in my village, and he is on my age is constructing a house for his family and himself, what this house looks special to me because it remains me to my childhood. When my family and I lived in the house like this one. This house is built with very simple way of construction method using natural available source. It main frame is made from bamboo, joint with rope or rattan (it is used nail currently). The roof is made from sago leaf attached on the frame and sawing it with rattan, and the wall made from sago midrib at some part and some other from sago midrib hard outer skin. The matter is strong enough to hold wind and rain and also wild animals. We used to live in the same room for the whole family, because our house had no other room, but one for whole family.

Construction Material

The main frame of the house is made from bamboo or wood, and each of connection is enforced by rope or nail, but previously we used natural fiber to tie and strengthen the joint part of bamboo. Ahmad is using nail to connect the part of the bamboo, and he inserts wood inside the bamboo hole to be able to nail it properly. The size of this house is 6 x 4 m2, and it seems has no separate room yet.

This house is under construction, and it constructed manually by my friend Ahmad. He is on my age, and he made this house not for temporary shelter, but permanent house of his family. Our family house was like this one, I know very well how to build it, I have plan to make one when the land for chili and papaya ready. I will make it for my family in the farming land.

This is the material use for the wall of the house, it the sago leaf midrib and need to dry it, before it attached as the wall. It can last for about 10 years in dry condition, and it is long enough for us before we need to replace it with new one.

This is the roof sheet. It is made from sago leaf fold on wood stick or bamboo stick and finally the leafs is sewn by rattan as you can see. (I will make another post to show how I made this kind of roof sheet)

Construction Method

As you can see the way he attaches the wall using sago midrib, firstly, the base or foundation need to put bamboo to avoid direct contact with the ground and to protect it from soil humidity and water. This way will ensure the wall will last for little longer.

This kind of wall is made from sago midrib outer hard skin (outer edge). It has been plaiting properly before it is attached on the wall frame.

The roof sheet is attached on by one as it seems on the photos, normally we tie it with rattan, but Ahmad prefers to use nail, it more efficiency since the rattan is getting more difficult to find around our area, and we need to buy it.

Interior

This house has 2 part of floor; main part is compact soil and the other part is divan, the floor of divan is made from Areca nut stalk and it is nailed to the frame, it is use to sleep or to sit inside the house. The soil floor normally use for kitchen.

This is the place where all materials were taken to construct the house. The only thing we need to have happy life is creativity!

In our traditional life, it is good enough to stay and protect our family, and give them a good place to stay. We farm the land for our daily life, rise and educate our children at home and send them to the school, but our most priority is love. Because love is the way to change to world to be a better place to stay.

Thank you for reading this post, spread love whenever we can!
