Nature is very amazing, and it always creates some natural beauty that human beings can't imagine. I mentioned that Chichen Itza has many natural underground pool or dissolved wells caused by strata collapsed and re-formation. After visiting the Pyramid of Kukulcan, we also wanted to visit and jump into one of these cenotes! Cenote Ik Kil is just a few miles from Chichen Itza, and is the same as other natural dissolved wells which were used for worship in Maya era.
This huge cenote is approximately five or six floors’ high, around 50 meters wide. There are so many roots and vines surrounding it that they look like a natural screen. There is also ground water seeping and falling from above - it is very beautiful! Going down the stairs to the bottom of the cenote, the water is very clear, and there are some unknown fish swimming by. At the bottom of the cenote, there is a five or six-meter-high platform where tourists were lining up to dive into the water.
The cenote was such a sacred place in the Mayan era. During the dry season, the Mayan people gathered together beside the cenotes to hold rituals and worship the Maya Rain God Chaac, throwing precious jade, pottery, incense and other offerings into it. But now it has become a popular place for tourists to have fun!
