Story Telling Crash Course - Session Nine: Form Constraints: Write ...

Welcome to the ninth day of our story telling challenge. We continue with the form restraints exercises. Two days ago we wrote three sentences per paragraph. Today we experiment with ten words per sentence. To be more clear, maximum ten words per sentence. Which mean you can have even a one word sentence. If you want.

That's probably the most challenging exercise for me. I love to write long, convoluted sentences. Makes me think my readers will surrender to the story. Well, sometimes they do, but sometimes they don't. Sometimes long sentences are good. But there are times when short sentences work better.

A famous Romanian literature critic, George Calinescu, enlightened me. He compared the stile of a famous novelist with water. Precisely, sea water. When you take it in your hands, the water is colorless. But if you put together thousands of drops, it's magic. It gets volume, color, perspective, everything. The novelist was Liviu Rebreanu, for what matters. And the drop of waters were those short sentences. Thousands of them.

And the comparison stands true for another writer I love. It's Papa Hemingway, of course. His frugal style is simply superb.

You realized by now that I'm already doing it. All sentences in this article have ten words. Or less.

So, your assignment is to do the same. Write an article with maximum ten words per sentence. It can be on any topic you want. As long as it has maximum ten words per sentence. You have 24 4hours.
