Chess Analysis of the Day

Tournament = Altibox Norway Chess 2017

Peter Svidler

Chess24 collaborator Peter Svidler is one of the greatest talents in the world of chess. It was once described by Mark Glukhovsky, editor of the Russian magazine "64", as an exception he could cope with his talent in a world of ultra-competitive and hardworking masters.

He won the last USSR Youth Championship in 1991, and in the Under-18 World Championship in 1994, but he really made a name by winning the senior Russian Championship that same year with 18 years. So far he has won that event no less than 7 times, the last in 2013, followed by what is probably the biggest success of his career to date, the Kanty-Mansiysk World Cup (2011). That gave him a place in the next qualifying tournament for the 2013 World Championship, where he finished third after a final victory over Carlsen.
