A City A Story Photo Weekly Contest #30 BRIDGE 橋

標題.jpg

Shanghai has several world-class bridges spanning the Huangpu River, such as Yangpu Bridge, Nanpu Bridge, etc. But today, I will introduce some historical bridges on the Suzhou Creek. These bridges are not as magnificent as those world-renowned ones. However, with a long history, these historical bridges witness the development of this city and the daily life of local people.

Suzhou Creek is one of the principal outlets of Lake Tai. It passes through the city centre of Shanghai and flows into the Huangpu River at the northern end of the Bund. As shown on the map, there are eleven bridges in the range of Huangpu District, from west to east: South-North Elevated Bridge, New Dam Bridge, Wuzhen Road Bridge, Xizang Road Bridge, Zhejiang Road Bridge, Fujian Road Bridge, Shanxi Road Bridge, Henan Road Bridge, Sichuan Road Bridge, Zhapu Road Bridge and Garden Bridge. Their history can be traced back to Qing Dynasty. Most of them were renovated at the beginning of the 20th century and have been used so far.

Compare to the South-North Elevated Bridge, the New Dam Bridge has a more venerable history. Dating back to Qing Dynasty, there was a wooden floating bridge on a stone floodgate. The New Dam Bridge is the first iron bridge over the Suzhou Creek.

Wuzhen Road Bridge

The original bridge was destroyed in Japanese war of aggression. What we see today was built in 1999. The new Wuzhen Road Bridge really had a modern design in those days. At night, the blue lights on the bridge create a peaceful ambience. Mr P and I like walking across this bridge when we walk along the creek.

Sihang Warehouse locates on the northern bank near the Xizang Road Bridge, where Xie Jinyuan led the "800 heroes" to resist Japanese invasion in 1937. Today, Shanghai has Jinyuan Road and Jinyuan High School, which are named after Xie Jinyuan, to commemorate the national hero.

Zhejiang Road Bridge

Zhejiang Road Bridge was renovated in 1906 by Shanghai Municipal Council with a unique structure of fish-bellied steel truss beam. In 2015, it was removed to the northern bank for a big maintenance. When it was moved back to the original position, a fish head sculpture was placed beside it...hmmm, it looks like a complete fish now.

Shanxi Road Bridge has the most outstanding appearance among these bridges. With sky blue colour and iron stairs, it seems so vintage and unique.

After walking about 5KM, we finally came to the confluence of the Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu River. Garden Bridge, one of the historical landmarks in Shanghai, is well known worldwide. From here, you can see the skyline of Lujiazui and the old buildings in the Bund as well. Many couples come here to take their wedding photography, and you could find more pictures here.

In ancient times, human civilization was birthed in the river area. Hundred years ago, the river brought the modernization to us. As the world changes, the city is striving hard to keep up with the times, and these bridges are the most vivid monument of its process.
