Hong Kong Snapshot (28) (With Video) – Night view of Garden Hill, composed by ignored stories

The night view of HK is one of the best night in the world. Every tourist of HK must have visited the beautiful view, maybe from Victoria Harbor, maybe from the Peak. But I would say, this night view has no story. It’s unreal. At the Sham Shui Po in the Kowloon of HK, there is a small hill that even not marked in Google map. On the hill, we may see the real night view of HK, built up by ordinary HK resident.

Garden Hill is located at Sham Shui Po. It is a small hill with 90.6m tall only. The official name of the hill should be Nam Mo Hill. As famous bakery manufacturer “Garden Company” moved their headquarter under Nam Mo Hill since 1931, Nam Mo Hill now becomes Garden Hill. Garden Hill is around 15 mins walk from Sham Shui Po MTR station.

On the hill, we may see through the night view from Sham Shui Po to the whole west Kowloon. There is no high grade residential, no high grade commercial center. All we can see is the beautiful night view built up by every HK grassroots people. It is not the unreal night view of the Victoria Harbor. It is the true night view composed of old public houses and tenements. We can never imagine this beautiful view is formed by those old buildings. But we can see some high grade tall building at the furthest in the photo. Maybe few years later, we can no longer enjoy this view again but only a great wall composed by concrete jungles.

Comparing with the night view of Victoria Harbor, the night view at Garden Hill looks more natural and real. The night view of Victoria Harbor is made up by tones of 1st grade commercial buildings, It’s Elusive, it’s not real, although it’s beautiful.

The night view of Garden Hill, is the true picture of HK. Every night is lit by the story of every HK grassroots resident. Many people say, beautiful night view can let us release from work pressure, pull ourselves from the helpless of the reality, and heal our heart. But when I was looking at the buildings sticking together just like matchboxes, I was thinking from what do we release our pressure?

HK seems having a world-famous night view. It seems glorious but actually perforce. Lights, the elements of a night view, is exchanged from the busy of HK people. The lights tightly stick together, representing the overcrowding of HK. People trapped in a little house away from the ground. The night view, the light, tell the hard work of every HK people. The myriad twinkling lights record the story of myriad families. But all these stories are ignored. Maybe sometimes, there is a photographer like me comes up to the hill and record the stories by a photo. Yes, Million stories in only one photo. And people will only enjoy the beauty of the photo, ignoring the stories behind.

Not only HK, in the world, millions of people, working hard every day just to earn a little house. We have forgotten our dreams, our passions. We started to work just because to earn money to get what we need in our daily life. And now we work for money itself. We are trapped in the city, trapped in our small house, but we never noticed. Sometimes, we see our neighborhood, and we ignore them, without saying a hi. One day, we get too much pressure. So we climb up to a hill, release our pressure from the night view, the night view composed by people who are lost in the reality, just like ourselves. And then we go back home, light on, and let another person release his pressure by the lights. Funny or not?

Unfortunately, truth is the truth. We may even have no time for a meal. How come we may have time to enjoy, and to taste the story of each light? It’s already very good that we have time to climb up the hill! So, tonight, I decide to switch out the light earlier. Don’t let the night viewer enjoy the beautiful view, even there is only one light missing. And I need to wake up early tomorrow to work, or I will be get scolded by my boss.
