To bring you something new about the festival, I am presenting to you what is happening in town during the holidays from another lens.

The city is breaking for a several days in Chinese New Year

Hong Kong is dubbed a city that never sleeps. A local business norm is that most people work long hours (HK has the longest work hours in the world, source), retail outlets close very late at night (closing at 10 pm is not uncommon) and some are even open around the clock.

Does the city really never sleep? Literally, Hong Kong does sleep and takes a short break during the holiday. You may be surprised that most shops are closed for business. When money is king in this materialistic city, it is a once-in-a-blue-moon quiet moment one hardly finds outside of Chinese New Year.

Traffic jams and parking

When most businesses in town literally are having a nap, this gives most locals an opportunity to cruise around town and visit friends and families.

Roads can be as clogged as normal days and traffic jams are definitely an event one has to avoid in Chinese New Year.

Another rare moment one may find is that the town is changing herself to a blackspot of illegal parking. Most police officers may turn a blind eye to parking violations.

A heaven for parking, but just for one day

Fun for kids

Most parts of the city are falling asleep but some are still energetic. A fair by the harbour has been in town every Chinese New Year. Parents may enjoy the spectacular view along the harbour and kids certainly can immerse themselves in the fair.
