Last Sunday, my husband and I visited Paradise by way of Kensal Green, which is a restaurant featuring a classic British menu and wide range of events in the evening. We were both quite impressed by the quality of the food as well as the charm and character of the place!
Located in Kilburn Lane, the restaurant is just a 5 minute walk from Kensal Rise's main high street, tucked nicely away from the usual hustle and bustle of West London streets. From the large double doors to the grand overhanging glass chandeliers, I literally felt like stepping into another era!
The first thing you come across is a front bar as well as private dining room to the right. However, we walked straight past it all to the main dining room at the back. The spacious and eclectic hall had a wonderful and welcoming atmosphere. The décor is brilliantly quirky, with renaissance-style oil paintings hung upon the wall, religious iconography, lovely velvet drapes and yet more elegant chandeliers. I loved it, lol.
Paradise by Way of Kensal Green is more than just a restaurant. It comes with 3 different floors contained within this gastro pub. Those being some private rooms, bar and full-on club. The ground floor is the main bar and restaurant, whereas the first floor is the club and bar where DJs spin classic tracks on weekend nights. I hear they also host open-mic evenings, poetry nights and special events here on certain days of the week.
The place is huge as it can comfortably accommodate 14-50 guests for private dining or up to 150 for some light drinks and snacks. A very popular venue for birthdays, leaving do’s, wedding celebrations and many more occasions too.
The menu is traditional home cooked British comfort food with a modern European twist. However on Sunday, they serve only "Sunday Roast" themed meals with options of pork belly, chicken breast, lamb and beef. If you are vegetarian, there are sea bass fillets and some delicious goats cheese to choose from. But I do love a great "Sunday Roast", so was adequately happy, lol.
We began the dinner with a plate of cured beef with cucumber, anchovy, capers and croutons. It was simply delightful. The blend of colours, flavours and smells fit together beautifully, with an incredible taste explosion in your mouth!
The bread was also tasty, although I felt at times there was a little more crust than dough. A special spicy flavoured butter accompanied it, which is something appreciatively different. Some nice little treats for the taste buds before the next course!
The "Sunday Roast" itself was delightful. I went for the slow-roasted lamb rump with fresh mint sauce and my hubbie opted for the 21 day aged rump of beef with horseradish sauce. The food was prepared with a careful attention to the smallest details to how it was prepared. The meat was extremely tender and juicy and cooked to perfection! The sides of creamy roast potato, the sweet carrot puree, honest roasted swede and the red wine gravy, all worked their magic so well! This is probably one of the best roast dinners I had in a long while!
For desserts, we had the homemade walnut with maple syrup cake and vanilla ice cream. Maple syrup is one of those natural, sweet flavours that we all love and when combined with that yummy cake and ice cream, oh my god, this is pure heaven!
By the time we finished our meal around 8:30pm, the place got quite crowded with a mix of American, French, English and a few other nationalities I couldn't recognize given the language barrier, lol. The crowd was mostly young and trendy, with a few long-term locals thrown in for good measure. If visiting early enough on a Friday or Saturday night, you can head straight upstairs to the club and enjoy some old school hip-pop selections if that is your thing, lol.
Paradise by Way of Kensal Green is a lovely place, whether you are looking for simply a decent meal or memorable fun night out. The food was absolutely delicious and staff very friendly. Great place for drinks and electronic music too! This place has become so much more than just a local pub for it's many loyal patrons. What an absolute gem of a place!
上周日我和先生去了一家名叫“Paradise by Way of Kensal Green“的餐厅。
