Last evening, we were in the mood for some Korean BBQ (somewhat of a rarity in London) and happened to discover this authentic, stylish restaurant called Gogi right next to the canal in Little Venice. If you have never tried some delicious Korean food, this is an absolute must, lol. We were actually quite lucky to have Gogi near us as the meals there are probably one of the best Korean cuisines we've had in North West London!
Stepping through the entrance way, it was almost akin to walking into some olden day factory. The brick walls and exposed steel outlets in conjunction with the antique wood work, all felt very "industrial" in style which also coincides with current trends. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, great for friends meeting up or family gathering.
Gogi serves a range of meat, fish and vegetables cooked in the traditional Korean way with their respective authentic flavours. So for Korean food, we normally order for the whole table to share, similar to the tapas way.
Starters
We began with the appetisers. This consisted of a selection of cabbage kimchi, radish kimchi and cucumber kimchi. Kimchi itself an acclaimed Korean dish that is made of ginger, garlic, vegetables, fish, salt & chili peppers. The popularity of kimchi is also notably because it’s various health benefits. It was once even selected as one of the world’s five healthiest food by a leading American health magazine!
Kimchi's unique taste can vary quite a bit based on different recipes used. Though the ingredients used here to make it were so fresh and rich in texture. I really loved its light and delicious sour taste! In Korean culture, kimchi is served with almost every meal so given the great nutritional benefits, there's no wonder why that is, lol!
We also had the Dduk Bok Gi, which is essentially rice cake and quail eggs mixed with vegetables in a spicy sauce. It had a very simple spiced and sweet taste all rolled into one. Though not overbearingly so! Once you take your first bite, you won’t be able to stop. I guarantee you, lol!
Main
Korean BBQ's are a popular method of preparing grilled meat! All the meat and sea food here had been marinated in a true Korean-style sauce for the best barbecue taste. All you have to do is just watch as everything is being cooked at your very own table!
We picked a few varieties of meat, however the soy chicken and bulgogi are definitely the winners here! They were heated and sizzling to perfection as I could really taste the rich, smoky flavour of the meat!
I was also advised by our waiter that the best way to eat Korean BBQ meat is in a traditional Korean ssam style, which literally means “wrap”. Therefore we ordered a separate basket of lettuce for this. Place the BBQ meat on the leaf with some sauce and wrap it up into a miniature packet so it fits straight in your mouth in one go! The crunchy leaf and tasty grilled meat went so well together, very refreshing indeed!
We also opted for the famous “stone pot” Bibimbap! The dish came served in a heavy earthenware pot, allowing the rice to sizzle and crisp up on the bottom. The seasonal vegetables, sensationally cooked beef, raw egg yolk and red chilli paste are all placed on top of a generous portion of rice, which is then mixed all together! That scrumptious bibimbaps is such a fantastic hearty choice, bursting with all kinds of different flavours!
For drinks, we went for a Korean beer called “Hite”. It is a pale lager with a nice refreshing taste to it. Went perfectly well with all that delicious BBQ meat, lol.
Dessert
We chose the Cherry Yoghurt torte and Mango peach as desserts. Both were exceptionally yummy. To put it mildy, we could not be more satisfied with our awesome evening dining out at Gogi!
Gogi is a true Korean restaurant through and through. Our expert waiter cooked it all in front of us culminating in a highly enjoyable, unique experience. For anyone who loves a "cooked-on-the-spot" meal, you would absolutely love it here. All in all, we had an amazing time here and this is something that we definitely will be returning to very soon.
