Hong Kong To Walk #6 – Hong Kong Museum of History to see the history of The Qing Dynasty

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Hong Kong to walk volume 6. Remember last time we have visit the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market? I hope you are not scared by the huge amount of people. And this time, I would like to lead you to a place with less people, but a place with cultural richness. What do you think of? Yes, this time we will visit the Hong Kong Museum of History.

The Hong Kong Museum of History was established in year 1975 when the City Museum and Art Gallery was split into the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong Museum of Art. And in year 1998, it moved to the new building on Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui as the permanent home. The building of Hong Kong Museum of History has a gross floor area of 17,500 m2, constructed at a cost of HK$390M and funded by the Hong Kong SAR Government.

The most convenient method to visit the Hong Kong Museum of History is taking the MTR, get off at Tsim Sha Tsui station and go to Exit B.

And you walk straight to the direction of Chatham Road South. When you arrive on Chatham Road South, turn left, and you will see the footbridge as below photo. Walk up to the footbridge and walk straight on it, and you will arrive the Hong Kong Museum.

The exhibitions of Hong Kong Museum of History mainly divided into permanent exhibition and special exhibitions. For permanent exhibition, the topic is “The Hong Kong Story”, which outlines the natural environment, folk culture and historical development of Hong Kong vividly. There are over 4000 exhibits which a numbers of graphic panels and dioramas to enhance the entertaining and educational purpose. The exhibition starts from the Devonian period 400 million years ago in Hong Kong and concludes with the reunification of Hong Kong with China in 1997.

However, this time, I have not visit the permanent exhibition, as I was attracted by the special exhibition. And the topic of the special exhibition this time is "Longevity and Virtues: Birthday Celebrations of the Qing Emperors and Empress Dowagers"

The Qing court attached great importance to the birthday celebrations for the court members, and the imperial celebration events were regarded as state ceremonies. And this time, the Hong Kong Museum of History cooperate with the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government. Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Palace Museum borrow a variety of artefacts to the Hong Kong Museum of History, to showcase the splendour of these grand birthday celebrations.

After walk-in to the entrance hall of Hong Kong Museum of History, you will see two big musical instruments, which are The Chime Set and The Set of Bronze Bells. I only know it now that The Chime is made from precious jade mined from Xinjiang.

There are also some generic versions in the entrance hall to let you have a play on it.

Now is the time we go in to the exhibition hall. Once you enter the hall, you will see a big Chinese word “壽”, which meaning longevity, combined by butterfly. And the whole exhibition will be alternated by butterfly

8.JPG

Maybe you will ask me why butterfly? I bet the below photo can answer you.

And please let me in traduce you some special exhibits. The first one is the Emperor Kangxi’s “Boundless Longevity”

13.JPG

Do you feel the word is so beautiful? But be aware that it is not a writing, it is a embroidery. Is is amazing?

Then, it is the “Birthday Celebration of Empress Dowager Chongqing", what’s so special is that it is about 28 meters long, you can have a very detail view on how grand is the birthday activity.

And there are a lot of exhibit such as royal tableware, dressing and gift

As there are too many exhibits, that I cannot put it all here. You should have a visit if you have chance. And there is a message board which you can leave your feeling or comment on here.

Let's see how others feel about the exhibition. (Sad that most of it is in Chinese, but the meaning is more or less the same that the exhibition is great and they learn a lot from it)
