Why I Clean Parks & Playgrounds For Free (Original Blog)

Do I get paid to clean parks & playgrounds? No, but I do it anyway because it's the right thing to do. When I take my 3 year old daughter Harmony, @happyharmonymay,

to the playground or park, I always tell her about why we should try and keep our parks and playgrounds clean. It creates a safe environment for us all, and I want her to be able to have a carefree experience when she is playing and living out her sweet childhood memories that we create everyday. Going to the parks and playgrounds near our house are always a weekly adventure and I know how important it is to make sure she is safe and out of harm's way.

This is a bit of an exaggeration, but some parks really look neglected and it's quite unfortunate that people, in general, including parents and passerbys, don't take a direct initiative to be the change that they want to see in their own environment
So for me, I set out being a positive example for my daughter and son by picking up any trash and hazardous glass shards and such when we step foot onto the premises and areas.

Harmony loves to run and jump and play in the sand, and it makes me wince to even think about her stumbling upon broken glass in the hidden heaps of sand. This is for the safety of all children and adults who step foot in these potential glassmine areas, so it's my responsibility first and foremost to ensure Harmony is out of any dangerous situations.

That includes removing the millions of cigarette buds that litter around as well. The thought of a baby or child putting those things in their mouth as something to chew on irks me.

How do I clean up? Pretty simple, I either have my disposable gloves with me, but if I don't have that, I grab two fairly straight branches small enough to operate with one hand and use them as Chopsticks and pick up trash and place them in the garbage bins all nearby and spread out about the park and playgrounds.

At night time, I realise drunkards and smokers and young hooligans lol come into the playgrounds and parks at night and they don't care about anything other than what they are focused on doing. There could be a million garbage cans in the vicinity but there always seems to be heaps of crap and trash around the bins rather than in it. Some of these careless people are literally, I mean, LITTERally, a garbage dumpster truck wherever they go, leaving littered messes for everyone else to care for.

However, I know my little children look up to me, and I could care less if people stare at me as if I am some paid garbage man doing my paid city job to keep the parks clean, but nope, I'm just doing what is right and hoping that people take notice and follow suit.

It shouldn't have to come down to being threatened or warned with a fine in regards to littering, but some people need to have some type of consequence otherwise there would probably be more trash than there is now. Even the fact that communities pay for cleaning services through their taxes makes some feel they have the right to throw trash on the floor, and when they are confronted by it, they respond with, "I pay my taxes, the city will clean it up, and I'm providing someone a job with this mess."

I don't think that's a valid reason why someone should feel so entitled to just throw trash on the floor but either way, I know I will be a good influence in my community regardless of other people's choices. There is nothing wrong with wanting to grow up and be a garbage employee. So much respect and kudos to all those who keep our environments clean, it is by no means an easy task and I take my hat off in recognition and regards to those who fulfill these vital and necessary occupations.

Do you also clean around you when you see trash?
