When my good friend, @coloringiship shared her first doodling contest recently on Steemit (story HERE), I thought it was a wonderful way of getting Steemians engaged on the platform considering that the market outlook isn’t that attractive lately.
What a brilliant idea to come up with some activities to get our minds off something that is beyond our control. Hence, I have decided to come up with “Who is Your Favourite?” contest in various theme (this round the theme is DISNEY PRINCESS or A FAVOURITE DISNEY CHARACTER) every now & then!
And the prize? Winner will win SBD of course!. And any chance of winning SBD, why not right?
But first, I’d like to share with you my story and about my favourite Disney Princesses.
We all grew up watching Disney’s cartoons and films. Even at this age, I never grew tired watching them. I know most stories by heart, and what scenes comes after next.
Growing up watching Disney’s cartoons and films, stories like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty & the Beast and Rapunzel not only I was mesmerised by their gracefulness, beautiful gowns and handsome Prince Charming.
I remembered asking my Mom to draw me a princess when I was younger because I couldn’t draw them. I watched her sketch on a piece of paper and observed how she drew the face, eyes, lips and hands. And then I copied them, drew many versions and continue to draw for a few years until it got much better as I incorporated shadowing and gradients into the drawing to create a realistic drawing.
Well, that was many years ago – when I was so into arts. Don’t ask me to draw now, I have not drawn anything for years!. I like crafts now and whenever I have the time, I will make them.
One thing about Disney’s princess films, I cannot help but realise that they ALL need men aka Prince Charming to come save them from their misery. While it makes a somewhat romantic rescue story, it gives little girls the idea that we need men to chase our problems away.
Until Pixar came into the picture and collaborated with Disney. They came up with new Disney Princesses that were not only brave, strong willed and lively! Gone are the days when Princesses only wait to be rescued from the highest tower or locked dungeons. It’s a refreshing change indeed! A positive change that will instil confidence in many little girls’ life.
Here are my favourite (and latest!) Disney’s Princesses.
Mulan
Mulan or her full name, Hua Mulan is a legendary woman warrior from the Northern & Southern dynasties period (between circa 420–589) in the Chinese history. Mulan secretly takes after her aged father's place in the army. She went to the battle and fought on for twelve years and gained a high merit but refused any reward and eventually retired to her hometown. It is not clear if she finally marry General Luo Cheng.
Merida
Merida (from Disney’s film BRAVE) is the daughter of King Fergus & Queen Elinor (ruler of a Scottish kingdom). Queen Elinor's traditional expectation is that Merida must marry and become a proper royal lady. However, Merida's insisted that she controls her own destiny instead. She’s gifted with perfect archery skills and is one of the most skilled archers in the kingdom. Apart from archery, she is also good in spears, sword-fighting and racing across the countryside on Angus, her English Shire horse.
Moana
Moana is a strong-willed only daughter of a Polynesian village Chief. She was chosen by the ocean to return a mystical relic (stolen by a demi god, Maui) to a goddess. When a misfortune strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui the demi god, in the hope of returning the heart of Te Fiti to save her people & the island. And I love her grandmother Tala too whom I swear it is from her Moana got her strengths from.
TinkerBell
I first knew about Tinkerbell from the Peter Pan story. It is because of her that I grew up fascinated with anything related to faeries and pixies. I really thought they exist! In Peter Pan, Tinkerbell doesn’t speak, she merely reacted with sounds of a tinkling bell. Personally, I prefer the latest versions of TinkerBell, where she truly uses her abilities to turn things around with the help of her 5 other fairy friends.
I am glad that I am able to watch Disney’s movies & films with my daughter and that she learns good values from them. I look forward to watching more of them together with her and I hope that she too will share (or watch reruns like me!) these stories with her children someday, like I did.
