This is my entry into Steemfluencer's Creative Writing Challenge #2, Task #6.
Here is the beginning which we are to work with.
03.08 p.m. August 15, 2015** Edward Hospital, Naperville IL**
Roger is speaking with his butler Charles.
Roger: Excuse me Charles, could you briefly explain me why I'm now laying on a bed in this hospital?
Charles: Yes, sir. I would love to. However, I couldn't really promise that it will be a brief story.>
Roger: Okey then. We have enough time. Please, go ahead,.
Charles: Good sir. You know our neighbors, correct?
Roger: Mr Adam and his wife. The strange ones?
Charles:Exactly sir. You know that sometimes they travel for longer and when they arrive back hope they have quarrels.
Well, last time the quarrel lasted longer than usual. That's why... [Continue the story].
"When you saw the strange blue light coming from the next property you decided you had to investigate." Charles continues. "You asked Nick to drive you across to their property. When you arrived you and Nick walked up the drive and to the lawn shed behind the house. That was where the blue light was coming from."
"There were no lights on in the house, so you both assumed that the couple was still travelling....."
Charles voice continued... and Roger's thoughts wrapped around the story until he could picture himself. A combination of Charles' words, and his own foggy memories painting the story in his mind.
Roger and Nick approached the shed. The bright light emitting from the doorway forcing both men to shade their eyes. The light was too bright for any normal home light bulb to produce. Roger squinted as he approached, hand held at the level of his eyes blocking at least a part of the brightness.
Suddenly a shadow crossed the doorway of the shed, providing a temporary reprieve from the light. Roger looked more fully on the shed, where the light was partially blocked by the silhouette of a woman.
"I told you not to eat that one." the woman's voice came out of the shed toward the men, but the words were directed inside the shed, not at them. "He had been drinking so heavily all night. You were bound to be affected when you drained him." The voice was distinctly that of Adam's wife... Ashley, that was her name. Ashley was lecturing someone about eating. IT didn't make a lot of sense to Roger, he turned to Nick who gave a shrug of confusion as well.
Then another voice joined the first, This low and masculine, and drunk. It was Adam's voice "I can handle my blood just fine you controlling, horrible bitch!" the man staggered into view. Either due to the bright light, or their lack of awareness due to the argument, neither seemed to take notice of the two men watching them.
"Now close the damn portal so no one finds it. I'm gonna...." his voice trailed off as he slumped against the shed wall "take a rest" he finally murmured.
The woman gave an exasperated sigh "Of course you are. Piece of Shit. Out of all the immortals in the world, why did I get hobbled with you?" the woman talked to herself as she moved around to the side of the shed. A electric "Schnick" was heard as a lever was pulled and the bright light shut off. "Portal is off. Switch is hidden. Now I suppose I have to drag your sorry ass into the house."
Ashley turned back to the man and walked over toward him. She paused as she noticed Adam staring ahead of him. Instead of resting, Adam had been drunkenly looking around now that the lights were off, and he had spotted Roger and Nick. Ashley turned to see what the man was looking at, and noticed them herself.
"Well now. If it isn't Ritchie Rich come down from on high to visit the less fortunate." Ashley intoned as she took a few steps toward a frozen Roger. "To what do we owe the pleasure of your company Mr Moneybags?" She asked as she came closer. Roger instinctively took steps back to match each stride she took toward him.
"Don't fuck him!" Adam slur shouted from the shed. "We agreed, only two a night. You done did that already." He nodded to himself "fucked one, sucked off the other one, counts! Friggin immortal whore."
Ashley turned a glare on her husband "I'll fuck anyone I damn well like." she called to the heavens, pointing to Adam "And you haven't gotten it up in centuries, so why should you care?"
Roger was about to turn and make a run for it while the two were distracted, but instead a shot rang out, freezing him where he stood. Adam looked down at his shirt which was quickly turning red.
"Great. That's just fucking wonderful. That was Italian silk you ignorant mother fucker." the other man was suddenly on his feet and had rushed across the ground separating himself from Nick. He had Nick by the throat before the man could so much as react. "Honey..." Adam called gleefully "Open the Portal back up. Let's give our friend here a taste of the Black Death."
Ashley giggled, their feud apparently forgotten as she turned back to the switch she had previously left. That same sound occurred again, and the Blue Light filled the shed door once more. Adam turned to the light and with a quick heave threw Nick through into the light. The sound of the switch filled the night once more and the light disappeared. And with it, all trace of Nick.
With one of the men gone, both turned their attention back to Roger. "Now what do we do with this one?" Ashley asked as Adam walked over.
"I suppose you could keep him as a pet love." Adam muttered as he walked up behind Ashley, wrapped his arms around her small waist and kissed her neck. "Maybe we can feed him some Viagra and I can feed on him and see if that works the same as the alcohol." Adam gave a bit of a laugh, although there was a tinge of real regret there.
"He'd be missed you dolt." Ashley responded pulling away from her husband. "We have to return him to the house. Give him a good concussion and jar his memory so he doesn't remember what happened."
"And that's when the big one hit you with a crowbar sir" Charles finished. "I arrived moments to late as the couple had disappeared and left you laying in the front of our gate. I brought you to the hospital for them to administer to your wounds and make sure you were not concussed.
Roger pondered this for a moment as his reverie broke. "But, I have a question Charles. How do you know all this if you arrived late?" Roger looked to the man for answers.
"Simple sir." Charles gave a half smile "Your driver Nick was my ancestor. He survived the plague where the vampires dropped him in 1351, he found a wife and had children. From the moment he knew he would survive the plague, Nick studied vampires and how to battle them. He passed that knowledge on to his children and instructed them to teach their children, and so on down the generations, until finally they came to me. I had forgotten the date sir, I am so sorry. I was supposed to appear and fend off the vampires for you so that you would not suffer at their hands. But I failed the mission my ancestor set out for me over 500 years ago."
The man drew a six inch steel spike from his inner coat pocket "But now that you are recovering, and now that you know who and what your neighbors are, I will begin to train you so that we can take them down together."
The man nodded before continuing as if to himself "But first you must rest and gain strength sir." he pressed a couple of buttons on Roger's medical cart, presumably telling it to send an extra dose of pain relief to his system, as he became almost immediately drowsy "We will speak later Sir. And we will complete Nick's designated task of killing the Naperville Vampires!
