As always, before we get into this week’s challenge, I must first announce last week’s winner.

This week, we actually had 3 people get the right answer to both questions! Those three were: @sustainablyyours, @nihalmaz, and @dedane. Good work to all of you! But once again, there can be only one winner, and that is who was fastest. Even though his original answer was incomplete, @sustainablyyours came back and added the missing info just before the next person got everything right.

Answer to Question #1 (from Week #3)


For the first question, you had to find a hidden message in the following:

HETUDJI EV KDKIKQB IYPU

The answer was: “Rodents of Unusual Size”

You get this answer by moving each letter in the code forward by 10 letters. For example, every H should be replaced with an R, and every E should be replaced with an O.

This question also had a second part. You had to tell me which movie that phrase came from. And that is a classic movie, The Princess Bride.

Four people were able to get this first question correct (but missed the second question). These Steemians were: @sanoza, @gduran, @sazih, and @victoriaslessor. Good job on that, and you will get an upvote by me!

Answer to Question #2 (from Week #2)

The second question was a two-part science question.

Part A asked you to name the three primary colors of light, which are:

red, blue, and green

Part B asked you to answer the following story problem based on color and light theory:

“Imagine that you are in a room made up of magenta-colored glass. In this room is an apple. Outside of the box in normal light, this apple looks pure red. If you are inside this glass room with the apple, and someone outside the room shines a pure blue light at the apple through the glass, what color does the apple appear to your eye?”

To solve this, you need to know what glass and objects do to the light that hits them. Glass appears the color that it is because it lets those colors through it; objects appear a certain color because it reflects those colors.

Okay, so that means that magenta glass will let magenta light pass through it. Magenta light is a mixture of red and blue light. So, magenta glass will let blue and red light pass right through (while absorbing green). Secondly, a red apple appears red because it reflects red light (and absorbs green and blue).

Let’s go back to the original problem. You start off with a blue light that shines through magenta glass. The magenta glass will let the blue light pass right through. That blue light will then hit the red apple. However, that red apple absorbs the blue light. As there is no other light source, there is no red light for the apple to reflect. Because of this, it reflects no light and looks black.

Three Steemains got this second one completely correct. All three of them also got the first question correct. Again, those three are: @sustainablyyours, @nihalmaz, and @dedane.

This Week's Problems

#1 - Decode This Message - Random Assortment

Last week, I started with an easy type of code: alphabet shift. This week, it is a bit harder. In this code, each letter stands for another letter, but the order is not necessarily the same. That means, if the “A” in the code stands for “D”, that a “B” in the code does NOT necessarily stand for an “E”. However, spaces are still in the correct places. With that in mind, here is the scrambled message:

DRDNZ EIG XPDF; GLS DRDNZ EIG NDIYYZ YPRDF.

Again, I have no way of telling if you cheated on this one or not. I am just really just relying on your integrity and honor as fellow Steemians.

The second part of the question is: Who said the above quote? (You can look it up if you don’t know.)

According to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation, what happens to the force of gravity between two objects as you increase the distance between the objects? (You may look this part up.)

According to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation, what happens to the force of gravity between two objects when you increase either object’s mass? (You may look this part up.)

In one scenario, two objects are separated by a certain distance. The mass of the first object is 10,000 kg and the mass of the second object is 20,000 kg. Let’s call the force of gravity between them, F. In a separate scenario, two other objects are separated by three times the distance of the first two objects. The masses of these two objects are 30,000 kg and 5,000 kg. Assume that in each scenario, the two objects exist in complete isolation. How does the force of gravity for the second pair of objects compare to the force of gravity on the first pair? (Be specific. For example, say 2x larger, or 1/100 as much.)
