James Hubbard has been living in Naples, Florida since 2004. He decided to move out of Michigan because he was tired of the heavy snowfalls that hit the state five months a year.
When he arrived in Naples, he got a job in an exclusive country club in the city, and soon became one of his managers. At 41 he has a good job and lives in a set of apartments in the city near his work and the coast of the sea.
Accustomed to see the hurricanes and storms, which constantly hit the state in the months of September and October. James ignored when the governor issued the evacuation warning of residents of the areas of greatest risk and danger.
He thought it would be another hurricane that would weaken before reaching the coast. For this reason he preferred to stay in his apartment and take care of his belongings. What James did not foresee was that the hurricane that by the time he decided to stay was in category 3, went to category 5 when he touched the Florida coast.
James found himself in a dangerous situation as he overflowed the nearby shores. The city began to flood rapidly leaving hundreds of homes under water.
Residents who refused to evacuate were in danger of death. Many went up to the rooftops and were rescued by government authorities and others lost their lives.
James was one of the lucky ones to survive being in a building, and living on a third floor, the waters did not affect him. But he saw his neighbors on the lower floors lose their belongings.
James spent three days trapped in his building until the rescue corpses evacuated him. The fear he felt and the danger he was exposed for not obeying the evacuation orders gave James a great lesson in obeying the authorities.
Today James returned home after many days, to see his home and the wreckage left by Hurricane Irma in his wake. The government together with the residents is rebuilding the devastation Irma left. James now knows that he must not underestimate the power of nature, and that he was very lucky to be alive ...
