The building in the photo is a refuse collection point. Refuse collection point? Yes, it’s a refuse collection point. This refuse collection point at the Starstreet Precinct, may be the most artistic refuse collection point in Hong Kong. According to the information on the web, the wall design is based on the style of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. Today, I bring you to know more about the Starstreet Precinct.
Star Street 星街
The Starstreet Precinct is at Wanchai, centred around the three streets: Sun Street, Moon Street and Star Street. In 1889, the first power plant of Hong Kong was built on the three streets. Later the region became a residential area. The three streets were named after the sentence of the “Three Character Classic”: The three luminaries, are the sun, the moon and the stars, which means power brings us light. (Three Character Classic was the first book of all children in China few hundred years ago.)

Star Street was not known until 2007. In 2007, the government started the project of revitalizing Wanchai and it co-operated with BIG company Swire to “create” the Starstreet Precinct. Why Swire? It’s because the Pacific Place, property of Swire was just few walks away.

Swire firstly built the Pacific Place Phase 3 and then led numbers of shops to the Precinct including restaurants, bars, galleries, boutiques etc. Star Street was turned into an international lifestyle area in just a few years. Even Vogue, international magazine described the Starstreet Precinct as the Hong Kong’s most global neighborhood. So what was original in the area? They were printing shops, garages, stores etc. and of course all gone.

Graffiti is now a must have item of “lifestyle”
Going into the Starstreet Precinct, you seem to have left Hong Kong into a European small town. Even the refuse collection point is decorated. But having such an enjoyment, you need to have the same payoff. Yes, I am too poor to consume in the shops. You know, the most expensive beef noodle, which cost HK$150, is also in the Starstreet precinct.

And how about the cultural and creative industry that the government mentioned? Forgotten. Before 2007, there were actually a number of creative small shops. But due to the rising up of rental fee, they all left.

Starstreet Precinct is a success in the angle of tourism. It attracted a lot of foreigner to visit. There are much more foreigner than the locals in the Precinct. And the old neighborhood? Sorry, I don’t know where they are now.
You will find there is no Chinese version of the Starstreet official website!
