Hong Kong Snapshot (55) – National Geographic and the last moment of Yue Man Square

An ordinary place can become special because of stories. Yue Man Square, my coming topic is one of the examples.

Yue Man Square is at Kwun Tong Town, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is the first developed area of Kwun Tong when HK government developed the Kwun Tong new town. Kwun Tong is a residential and industrial town. There is nothing special until two incidents.

In 2016, HK photographer Lee Wai-Sang took a photo at the terrace of Yue Man Square. The photo won the honorable mention of the “National Geographic International Photography Contest 2017 – the PEOPLE category” hosted by National Geographic. HK people started to focus on Yue Man Square. We find that, the ordinary terrace, the ordinary residential and industrial area, is never ordinary. It is waiting for us to discover its beauty.

There are still a number of old local shops at Yue Man Square. But, since the start of “Kwun Tong Town Centre Redevelopment Project”, they will leave us soon. Yue Man Square is one of the items in the project. Now the Urban Renewal Authority is doing the acquisition of the whole street. All residents had moved out already. There are now only half of the shops still running.

This McDonald’s broke the world record for daily transactions at a McDonald’s outlet, as well as the ten busiest McDonlad’s in the world. But we still have to say bye to it.

I entered the second floor of Yue Man Square. The corridor was only supported by few light tube. All the flat had been locked by big locks.

I don’t feel bad about the redevelopment of Yue Man Square. It’s really an old place. To development a society, it needs to be redeveloped. But I still feel strange that the Yue Man Square is going to be totally different. I don’t know how the old citizens of Yue Man Square think. I just hope the town after redevelopment can really benefit us, citizens of Hong Kong.
