Summer Streets!
Last Saturday, we hosted a public workshop as a part of NYC Dept of Transportation’s Summer Streets Festival. My previous posting was about workshop material making process.
Workshop booths were set up along the Park Avenue. The streets were full of people, bikers, joggers, lives and fun activities. Our table was located at the ‘Uptown Rest Stop’ by the famous Seagram building. We had so much fun drawing facades, making a little city with kids and parents.

지난주 토요일 뉴욕시 교통부의 ‘썸머 스트릿’ 차없는 거리 에서 공공 워크숍을 했습니다. 지난 포스팅 에서 건물 그리기' 워크숍 을 준비하는 과정을 썼는데요. 당일 아침에 비가 내렸지만 많은 분들이 참여하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 역시 어린이들은 상상 이상이였습니다.
‘Do you want to draw a building?’
We asked kids the same question when they came to our booth: ‘Do you want to draw a building?’ Now, look at some of the building typologies here. You can tell how city's built environment influenced the way they draw their buildings.
Most of participants were city residents, a few of them were from New Jersey and one from Philadelphia.

뉴져지와 필라델피와에서 온 서너명 가족, 대부분 뉴욕에 사는 아이들과 청소년들이 참여했습니다. 사람은 환경에 가장 큰 영향을 받는다고 하죠. 자 그럼 아이들이 그린 ‘건물’ 을 보실까요?

스튜디오로 가져와 아이들이 어떤 빌딩을 그렸는지 유형별로 나눠보았습니다. 고층건물과 타워가 많습니다. 풍경을 그린 아이들은 블록의 가로를 긴 방향으로해서 그린 점이 보입니다.

Some Thoughts
We had chances to converse with the parents while kids were drawing. Most parents’ number one concern was about their children using smart phones and tablets. As much as adults, children are exposed to touch screen devices so often that when it comes to craft activities, they quickly lose interest. Providing creative and interactive programs in public has became very important and especially design education opportunities.
Many parents reminded us that they want to encourage more of architectural design activities but there are not many options available in the market (besides LEGO). Providing public workshops about urban design could hold a great intention and a meaning for children at young age to start thinking about buildings and city.

아이들이 그림그리는 동안 부모님들과 대화를 나눌 기회가 많았습니다. 타블렛이나 터치스크린 기계를 어린 나이부터 접하며 아이들이 만들기, 그리기에 금방 흥미를 잃을까 걱정이 된다는 대화가 가장 많았고. 창의적, 상호적인 엑티비티, 특히 디자인에 관련된 교육 프로그램이 더욱 다양해 졌으면 한다고 했습니다.
빌딩 숲 뉴욕임에도 불구하고 건물과 도시에 대해 배우는 활동은 '레고' 외에는 큰 시장이 없는 점에 대해 안타까워 했습니다. 건축에 대해, 도시의 이해에 대해 어린 나이부터 배울 수 있는 공공 프로그램이 어떤것이 있을까 생각해보는 계기가 되었습니다. 워크숍은 다음주에도 이어질 예정입니다.
같은 워크숍을 다른 도시에서 하며, 다른 문화권의 아이들이 어떤 빌딩을 그리는지 보는것도 재밌는 프로젝트가 될것 같습니다.
