Recently I was wondering what the usage of my public seed node was like. (See my witness thread for specs and other details.)
It turns out there are close to 80 active connections to the P2P port (seed.bitcoiner.me:2001) at all times, from all over the world! As I have configured the seed node to also be an API node, there are active connections to there too, about a dozen all the time!
Then, I thought it would be neat to plot the connections' origins on a map and show it live on one of my domains bitcoiner.me! To get to the map, check on the View Stats! link in the first box that lists connection details.
Here is what it looks like for the P2P port :
Note that there are button links at the top to switch the map to another port's stats.
The data and map is updated every minute.
The main tools I've used are various shell commands like netstat and grep and the Python project PyGeoIpMap which uses the FreeGeoIP web service to map hosts to coordinates.
Cool, huh? It's fascinating to see all those points on the map!
