I spoke Arabic until age five. My father applied for refugee status for his Lebanese parents. This was during the Civil War. His family was denied. My father stopped speaking Arabic.
I lost my native language in an early mirroring of the rejection of my culture due to fear post-9/11. This poem speaks to both.
