Our world is full of good and weird people roaming our streets and online in search of innocent prey to take advantage of. Unfortunately, most people are addicted to sharing personal pictures especially pictures of children -now dubbed sharenting on social media sites . According to an article in The Telegraph , by the time the average child is five, its parents most have posted 1,500 pictures of him or her in social media sites. In addition, Some of these pictures were shared by friends or family members ( without the parents’ consent ) who want to look cool with a cute little relative.
Importantly, we adults have to ask ourselves if we invade children privacy by taking their pictures when they are playing, taking bath , sleeping or eating and uploading those pictures on Facebook, instagram , steemit or any other social media site ? don’t you guys believe that children should have a voice and we should guide their privacy especially as they are vulnerable? Below are some few points:
- Digitally Kidnapped and bullying : family members unknowingly upload funny pictures which might result to the child being bullied in school or kidnapped by criminals who accessed all personal informations online or even digitally kidnapped by sites like Instagram example :The Creepiest New Corner Of Instagram: Role-Playing With Stolen Baby Photos - Parents say it’s a form of digital kidnapping , however Instagram is not sure what to say see link here
- Child Pornography : This is a serious case and its true of the dangers around us. An innocent Australian woman ,for example, shared her 8 year old daughter and nine month old son pictures on Facebook which later landed in the fantasies of some perverts in countless pornographic sites . Furthermore, Brittany Champagne (an American) came across her daughter’s picture on someone else’s profile-claiming to be an 11 year old bisexual cheerleader. Most worryingly, her disbelief turned to horror when she learnt that eleven porn sites were also hash tagged onto the post. Her little girl’s photo, as well as her pictures (Brittany) and her nine-month-old son were everywhere-see link for more source
- Negative Emotions: some children will certainly not like it when they grow up and see their childhood pictures on Facebook or any other social media sites even if they didn’t express discontent as a child . One example is a 18 years old Australian lady who sued her parents in order to force them to remove her childhood pictures on Facebook –she indicated that her parents knew no shame and didn’t care if she was lying necked or sitting in the toilet-every moment was photographed and shared on social media sites . Do you agree with here action?
Conclusion: Social media has its advantages, however every good thing has downside especially with regards to the most vulnerable members of our community. As adults , we should try our best to protect children privacy and one way is to be careful of : what we , our friends or members of our family share on social media sites because not doing so, might lead to an unpleasant situation.
