My response to Paul Steyn's myopic article "Mr. Environmentalist" shockingly published by National Geographic in Sept 2015.

Mr. Environmentalist (an article by Paul Steyn)

You told us about the coming extinction, but the extinction never came.

You told us all the facts, but it turned out they were fiction, and you asked us for money but where did it go?

You told us to do this, and you told us to do that, but it never made any difference in the end.

You vilified the innocent.

And you spoke nicely to the ignorant.

You took those good hearts for granted, and now your cries no longer reach any ears.

You have pressed the alarm bell one too many times.

Mr Environmentalist, don’t let your ideals cloud the real solutions. When you make noise for the sake of noise, it becomes white noise. And when you cry wolf, well, we all know the story.

We don’t want you to save the world, because the world will be fine without you or me. Let’s focus on the right environmental issues, the important environmental issues, and not just the ones that echo the loudest.

If you look closely, humans have solved some of the greatest challenges without your rhetoric.

So please, next time you press the alarm bell, make sure the emergency is for real, otherwise something important might get crushed in the stampede.

This article was previously published by National Geographic, but has since been removed!
This is reposted from one of my brilliant Facebook rants! It still rings true today a year from it's publication... even more so as the mountain of evidence continues to point towards earth's warming trend spiraling out of control, and the breakdown of ocean current systems.

Example: This chilling timeline of temperature change over the last 20,000 years. http://www.popsci.com/xkcd-earth-average-temperature-timeline

Mr. Steyn,
I found your article insulting and myopic.

Scientists and environmentalists (of all genders) bring to light the radical change and collapse of systems. The alarm you hear in the background is not coming from us, for we manage to stay remarkably measured, and skeptical in the face of unimaginable catastrophe.

The sound you hear is merely our data and the scientific consensus banging against the hollow walls of industry and capitalism.

Without the dedication of environmentalists, the public would be standing blindfolded in a burning house.
Remember, when it comes time to renew your subscription that National Geographic would like you to remove the batteries from your smoke detectors, put on your blindfolds now.

Mr. Steyn, you are no "explorer". I have to wonder if you've actually been in the field and interacted with the people of the land he glamorously photographs. Does he listen to their stories of how their daily lives are changing: how they catch less fish to eat, or how different coral has begun to cover their reefs.

I suspect he is hidden behind his beer bottle, or his 1000x zoom lens, oblivious to everything but the next sunset filtering through smoke-filled skies.

Love,
Ms. Environmentalists
