If you are in Romania, sometimes your driving skills are put to the test. If you live in Romania, you already know that, if you're just visiting, you're going to find out for sure.
The Romanian infrastructure is not the best, there are many wholes but today I'm not going to write about that, but about a wonderful place called Bicaz Gorge, Cheile Bicazului in Romanian, Békás-szoros in Hungarian. It's one of my favorite places for many reasons.
Bicaz Gorges is a beautiful area in Romania, located in the central part of the Hasmas Mountains, in the northeast of the country, in the counties of Neamt and Harghita. The 6 km road is made of serpentine with U turns that puts your driving skills to the test.
This is how it starts. Nothing scary, just a couple of easy curves.
Another, just for fun so you don't fall asleep.
Another, and this time you can see some marks on the road.
You have to drive under the rocks, so if you drive a van or a truck ... you'd better pay attention :)
If you're on foot, which is highly recommended if you want to enjoy the beauty of the place, you have to walk along the road and that could be challenging at times but we're going to talk about that later.
Don't worry, what you see on the photo above is just the warm-up, the fun begins later.
Easy, easy! This is not the day to be a hero, not here at least :)
Don't worry, he can do it, he's used to it, he's doing it every day.
I remember when I took this photo, the driver of the Audi was hooting at me and I had to mind my steps, had to pay attention to the cars while taking photos and enjoying the view.
Most of the people are driving slowly because the passengers are taking photos from the car but those who are not tourists ... that's another story.
This is where the fun begins. the road is so narrow here that only one car can pass at a time.
Sometimes there is a line waiting on the other part.
This is the first U turn from above and the garbage in the grass, unfortunately.
There is a 155 m tunnel on the road that has a walkway on both sides for pedestrians.
Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel? I can :)) This is the new tunnel inaugurated in 2005.
This is the old tunnel built in 1918. I still remember the times when this tunnel was functional. Only one car could pass at a time and not all the trucks were allowed due to its height. It is 68 m long and 4.1 m high.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is where the real fun begins. This is the big serpentine.
These photos were taken in 2016 and thank God the road was good comparing to what I've seen in the '90s when there was just a narrow serpentine with no extra.
This is something you don't see every day.
I was staying there, waiting for the cars to pass so I can take some photos and it was fun!
It would have been nice a photo from above but that's only possible using a drone of a helicopter, which I don't have.
This is already the end of the canyon, tourists are taking photos at every step.
Can't finish my post without a photo of the beautiful blue sky above the rocks.
If you're still here, I want to say thank you for reading this, or at least taking the time to look at the photos.
If you're in Romania, don't miss this place, it worth visiting!
This is my entry for the #beautifulsunday challenge, hosted by @ace108 and for #sublimesunday by @c0ff33a.
