“The Heart Remembers.” A 50-Word Story for @jayna

The Heart Remembers

(Somebody’s wrinkled hand.) How come I can feel these raindrops? Her memory lost her farther this time; skipped adulthood, the disease the doctor called “a condition”. His wet face smiles: "Come inside, candy cane; it’s raining." Her heart knows better. She nods; her lethargic figure walks inside into his warmth.

About This Fifty-Word Story

This is my entry into @jayna's Fifty-Word Challenge. You can read the rules in the post for this week here.

The prompt for this week is "memory."

Popular wisdom has it that memory plays tricks on us. We humans deal with our memory as if it had a will of its own. No need to study philosophy, medicine or literature to learn that Memory is a cunning lady.

When I saw the prompt was “memory,” the first thought that crossed my mind was the song form Cats (the 1981 musical) in the voice of Barbra Streisand. Nostalgia instead of happy recollections, better times gone instead of better times to come; memory strongly alludes to the years you miss and to either a feeling of longing for the past or the struggle to recall relevant events during those years which have been erased.

When I started writing the story, I decided to stop for a while and find a nice pic of an elderly hand in the rain, but there was not any I could use. What to do? Well, I wrote it down. It is the first thing you “see” in “The Heart Remembers.”

In order for my word-picture to stand apart, I used parentheses, so the readers would not confuse it with my heroine’s inner voice. I used italics for the latter and quotation marks for her husband's.

Once I had defined my argument, the challenge was making every voice sound different. It might have worked well, I hope.

Thanks for Reading.
