Split Movie Review : Rise of Shyamalan

Night Shyamalan is one of the directors who made a rapid introduction to Hollywood. The third film of his career brought him worldwide recognition. Sixth Sense has achieved great success. His next film, Unbreakable went up well. But after that movie a long period of decline began. Every movie he make is starting to be of a lower quality than before. Criticism turn bad, boxoffice fell. People started to forget him...

Split was the movie Night Shyamalan went up again. Because the movie was really beautiful. Moreover, he shared the same universe with Unbreakable. The director explained that he would create a shared universe. Like MCU or DCEU. But the Shyamalan Universe has a realistic atmosphere. The characters are closer to real life. James McAvoy main actor in the movie and he's realy perfect acting. The story of Split was inspired by Billy Milligan's real story. In the film, James McAvoy plays a character who has been abandoned by his father when he was a little boy, and has been constantly miserable by his mother. And also he has 23 different personality. One of these different personalities finds a way to suppress the others. And he kidnap three young girls to implement his own plan. Director Night Shyamalan has created an empathic enemy figure as in Unbreakable. This is actually something that all superhero movies should have. Because stereotypical characters and attractive. Superhero movies unfortunately can not offer bad characters.

Source of Picture

I think James McAvoy and his acting is the best part of movie. Especially at the end of movie, personality changes scene was incredible. I think Anya Taylor-Joy is also acting as a good act. I read some critics about that. They complained that the player was so dull. I think that's supposed to happen. Because Casey raised as a hunter when he was a child. And the hunters become cold-blooded. Also his uncle's harassment changed her. These are important points for characterization. So she was good for me. But unfortunately we do not see good acting except James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy. The characters were thoughtfully designed. Their actions were reasonable. We knew why they were acting like that. I think it's good and hard to do. For example, Casey's flashback scenes were very important for her characterization and main story. Creating strong characters is the most important element of thriller and horror films. For example in 10 Cloverfield Lane has a Mary Sue character. This questioned the reality of movie.

Besides these, filmin visuality and cinematography were also good. The director used a visual language that matched the characters. I would recommend it to everyone. A nice alternative superhero story. I guess that's it for now. See you!
