Banana flowers are among my favorite. They are so big and beautiful - well, to tell you the truth - they like to show off just a little.

First, they are the color of the leaves and you have to be lucky to spot one. But pretty soon, they burst on the scene with beautiful dark red petals with smaller pink flowers hidden under each large red leaf.

Hummin birds love to drink from the pink flowers which eventually will become a hand of bananas.

The large red flower petals fall to the ground as the flower keeps growing longer, with new pink flower future banana hands being revealed.

Then, after a while - no more pink flowers appear and the stem still keeps growing. Now is the time to cut off the flower and eat it. So delicious!!

And the long wait for the bananas begins. They have to grow and grow and then ripen. That takes several months!

My bananas live off our washing machine water which is piped into the banana circle. And they are worth the wait!! So good!
